Album Notes
Ragas and talas are India's unique contribution to the field of musical art. A number of popular ragas that have been incorporated into the classical raga-ragini system originated in regional folk music traditions as folk melodies. The word raga is derived from the root ranja, 'to color' or 'tinge' with emotion. Thus, a raga is an atmosphere, a musical coloring associated with a feeling. It is this raga-bhava, (essence or mood of a raga) during a performance, which draws in the listener to the music for an ecstatic journey of a musical experience.
