‘They Paid Us in Tub Time, Tantalizing Tales & Songs of a Touring Troubadour’ takes advantage of the new technology by combining a novel with a double CD all in one e-book. It follows songwriter/troubadour Kristina Olsen through growing up in Haight-Asbury in the '60s to life as a professional touring musician. Here you can download only the songs.
Kristina Olsen has not lead a typical life. This memoir and travelogue is packed with laughter, sex, sadness, adventure and a true glimpse of a woman who never took the well-trodden path in following her musical call. A musical call that has lead her to play such festivals as: Philadelphia Folk Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Kerrville Festival (where she won the songwriter contest), Celtic Connections in Scotland, Woodford Folk Festival in Australia and has had her songs covered by; Eric Bibb, Fairport Convention, Mary Coughlan, Mollie O’Brien, and Maddy Prior among others. Olsen is famous for her hilarious stories in concert, and now her fans can read her adventures and listen to her songs.
‘They Paid Us in Tub Time’ is the musical meanderings of Kristina Olsen’s life and career. From enjoying the taste of tropical bugs to spending the night in a sports car in a snowy pass, to getting her toes sucked in New Zealand; this is the story in song and prose of an untypical troubadour. She finds a fling in Scotland through a folding bicycle, has her old jeep gutted in Mexico and tells of her first and latest loves. She says, “Growing up in Height Ashbury in the ‘60s thoroughly impressed and warped my outlook.” Interspersed throughout the story are the songs connected to the stories.
“It was exciting for me to create this new way to take readers/listeners on a journey,” Olsen says. “I’ve admired authors who had companion CDs of music for their readers, but I find that I’m rarely reading a book when I’m sitting next to a hi fi system. I’m on the bus or waiting in line or sitting out in a sunny meadow. So with the new e-book technology, I realized I could combine both. You read a chapter, then there is a song imbedded that compliments that chapter. Which creates a different sort of pace to the reading. Most i-Book devices have a headphone slot and the capability of playing music. Failing that you can read/hear it on your computer.”
There are twenty original Kristina Olsen songs imbedded throughout. Ten are brand new songs, nine are older songs but with new arrangements and one track from a previously released album.
Laurel Cohn, her editor writes, "It's like I'd hitched a long-distance ride with her. She told stories along the way about her time on the road and of her childhood, she shared a little about her family and friends, she played some of her songs, and there were times where we just cruised along comfortably enjoying the landscape – those beautiful short interludes (like moon face) that help pace the narrative as a whole and create space for the reader. She is open, offering laughter, intimacy, reflection and honesty. And by the end, when it was time to go our separate ways, I felt like I'd made a friend."
