Within the buzzing of bees Layne Redmond has discovered a rich aural palette of rhythm and timbre that has inspired a fascinating musical exploration of the sonic mysteries of the hive. Built on the actual drones of bees and framed by acoustic percussion, vocalizations, and other instruments inspired by sounds from the beehive, this music is as new as the morning and as ancient as the universe. —Rick Mattingly
Hymns From The Hive is an aural libation, poured by the incomparable Layne Redmond who continues to bless us all … and now the bees … with this wild-hearted New World Sacred music. Layne is one of the great pollinators of our time, ever and always magnetizing astonishing world musicians and singers into her abundantly creative field. This exotic musical tapestry also weaves Layne’s consummate drumming with the transcendent hum and thrum of honeybees from the mountains of Western North Carolina.
The sounds of bees that find a home in every track were recorded in my apiary two summers ago, the year that most of my hives perished the following winter. It was a time of immense heartbreak. These are the voices of colonies that were lost and of one hardy lineage that survived and still proliferates in my bee yard into its own seven generations … a hive I have come to call Old Faithful.
Apis mellifera, the honey bearers, the honeybees, these sustainers of life … are struggling. We are living in a time that will determine whether our music will be a requiem for the bees or a celebration of the continued life of these precious winged beings. Hymns From The Hive is a vote for Life. The bees and I are at Layne’s feet.
Come abide with us here, in the heart of the Hymns, in this amazing musical sanctuary of holy bee communion.
