ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
DIGIPACK CD - Extensive liner notes, including complete Lecuona biography.

ERNESTO LECUONA (1895 - 1963) was the most important cuban composer of the XX century. He was nicknamed "the Cuban Gershwin". His Latino style profoundly impressed both European and American listeners and was an immediate fascination for many big bands. He wrote more than 400 songs, 176 pieces for the piano, 50 theatrical pieces and 31 orchestral works. Lecuona was also an enchanting pianist. Musically, his work for the piano introduces elements of remarkable originality despite having dealt in a non-avant-garde ambient. To the influences of the refined music of the first half of the century, he adds a re-evaluation of the Spanish tradition, and additionally Cuban, in a classical key. His attempt, certainly achieved, at integrating rhythms and traditional melodic expressions with the structures of the late-Romantic writing for the piano, is of absolute interest.

MARIO SOLLAZZO was born in Naples on March 30, 1974. He graduated from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome in Piano and Chamber Music. He continued his piano studies at the Musikhochschule of Detmold in Germany and later in music composition at the Musikhochschule of Dresda. He is a pianist, clavichord player, and opera composer both in the instrumental and electronic musical scope.

The best version of Lecuonas music I never heard.
The best version of Lecuona's music I never heard. And so a wonderful touch.

Enzo Siciliano - La Repubblica - Italy

Debussy comes to mind, but still more Ravel
Mario Sollazzo by the piano offers a selection of the Cuban composer, adding colour and rhytmic wit, attention to popular motives, and the ability to orchestrate on a level where jazz and music of his time (Debussy comes to
mind, but still more Ravel) is confronted with emotion and with elegance.

Marco Boccitto - Il Manifesto - Italy

Urban cues and gypsy wriggles
The talent Mario Sollazzo from Naples, with his snag touch, keeps all the freshness inatct, fills them with sexiness and pride, afro tones and Andalusian decadence, urban cues and gypsy wriggles, the colors that descends from the various pages of the celebrated Cuban composer.

Alessandro Rosa - La Stampa - Italy

To the "Cuban Gershwin" the pianist Mario Sollazzo dedicates the optimal "La 32". Classic formal elegance, but alive is the hand that captures that compound of irony and the sense of tragic, one that the composer is successful in amalgamating with a modern happy genius.

Bernie Kalban - Edward B. Marks Music Company - U.S.A.

A fine recording
A fine recording and a fine pianist.

Alfonso Pone - Music on Tnt - Italy

The performer is extremely skillful
The 18 compositions are very involving for the sounds and the ability of Mario Sollazzo in picking the numerous nuances of the music of Lecuona. The performer is in fact extremely skillful to give weight to the score in way
one would dare to say minutious that is, interpreting all the whole score with the same attention and dignity.

Terzo Anello - Radio Rai 3 - Italy

A beautiful performance
A beautiful performance!

HAMADA Takasi (Japan)
