ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Number One CD on the world music charts!

Voted by international radio hosts as the Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of 2008.

Bill Leslie is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and world music artist whose albums have been among the best-selling on the New Age Reporter charts. A native of North Carolina, Leslie's CD, I Am a River, hit number two on the charts in 2006.

Famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma praised Leslie as “one of the greats in modern Celtic music.” Critics call Leslie’s music “tranquil yet exhilarating, stunningly beautiful, and full of joy and peace.” Compositions have a highly melodic folk and Celtic core taking listeners on a powerful emotional journey.

Leslie has produced six albums this decade. His 2004 release, Peaceful Journey, hit number one on the New Age Reporter's world music charts in December 2004, while his Christmas in Carolina peaked at number two. Leslie, who plays guitar, Celtic whistle and piano, was named "Best New Artist" worldwide by the NAR in 2005. His Christmas in Carolina album was named 2005 "Best Holiday Album."

Leslie’s latest release Blue Ridge Reunion is a CD and companion book featuring his father’s mountain watercolors. Bill visited the landscapes that inspired his dad's art work and composed music based on this new inspiration. Blue Ridge Reunion includes eleven instrumentals and three vocals.

Leslie also co-founded the Celtic fusion group Bragh Adair and helped produce the group's two albums Grace in Stone and The Hunt. He currently tours with Lorica, another Celtic fusion group. In addition, Leslie works as an environmental journalist and morning anchor for television station WRAL in Raleigh, NC.

A graduate of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, he has won more than 70 major news awards including two Peabody Awards and five Emmys. He lives in Cary, N.C. with his wife Cindy, daughter Lauren and son Will.

Blue Ridge Reunion
Those of us who have listened to Bill Leslie for years know that he has carved out his own unique niche in Celtic fusion/roots music. On his most recent CD, Blue Ridge Reunion, Bill provides enough of that traditional style to provide a comfortable familiarity, but he also explores new stories, new instrumentations, even new chords with wonderful results! A tribute to the singer songwriter s father, Blue Ridge Reunion resonates with hints of Classical Music (Albinoni comes to mind) and epic film style all melded with the sometimes restful, sometimes restless themes that we have come to expect from Carolina s Bard. Blue Ridge Reunion is Bill Leslie at his most haunting. --Dr. Garry Crites, Duke University.

Blue Ridge Reunion
If the artwork on Bill Leslie\'s Blue Ridge Reunion\"CD is more striking than on any previous CD, so is the music within. The artistry of Bill\'s father adorns the album, and his creativity lives on in the musical artistry of Bill. The vocal tribute \"Water of Life is Bill\'s most powerful and distinctive song to date. It will bring a tear to the eye of anyone who wistfully misses a father, or mourns the destruction of our pristine mountains. Toss in a fun song, Mountain Train, again bringing to light Bill\'s dad, and it\'s enough to brighten heaven with a beaming father\'s smile. What inspiring artists arose to mountain heights right here in the Goodliest Land of North Carolina...both named William Augustus Leslie! --Bob Inkseep, Raleigh, NC

Blue Ridge Reunion
Bill Leslie certainly has a talent for composing music that takes us to a certain place and time. I don t know how he does it but it s really wonderful! In both word and song, Bill created a loving tribute to your father\'s art, his appreciation of the land, and the clear values he instilled in his children. I don\'t know that you can ever say goodbye to a parent that you so love and admire. Perhaps it\'s just best to say:Thank you. I promise to pass on the lessons you\'ve taught me. Bill Leslie certainly met that benchmark with this project which includes a companion book by the same name. --Clayton Henkel, North Carolina News Network

A Beautiful Tribute!
“Blue Ridge Reunion” is Bill Leslie’s musical tribute to and celebration of his father. Bill’s father, also named William Leslie, died when Bill was a teenager and he never had a chance to say goodbye. Thinking of his watercolor paintings, Bill visited some of his father’s favorite landscapes in search of musical inspiration. Words and music started to flow as he felt his father’s presence - a magical and powerful reunion of spirits. Bill Leslie has been called “one of the greats in modern Celtic music” by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, which is heady but well-deserved praise. Bill is also an award-winning journalist and co-anchor for WRAL news in Raleigh, NC, where he and John Tesh roomed together and worked at the same radio station right after college. “Blue Ridge Reunion” is a collection of eleven instrumental and three vocal selections, and the music ranges from simple folk songs to fully-orchestrated compositions with a cinematic sweep. Most of the pieces are titled for places Bill’s father painted and/or shared with his son and obviously come from a very personal and emotional place. It’s a fascinating experience to hear Bill’s musical interpretations of what his father captured visually in his watercolors. A companion book of William Leslie’s watercolors and Bill’s memories of growing up with him in North Carolina will be available shortly, and this music makes me very anxious to see more of the artwork!

The CD opens with “The Bluffs,” Bill’s father’s favorite inn just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It begins as a guitar solo, and becomes somewhat more orchestrated as it evolves. Celtic whistles, violin, and percussion add spirit and fullness, but this piece remains quite simple, direct, and very beautiful. “South Mountains” is a bit more sweeping as it describes the majestic vistas Bill’s father painted in this area. Piano, strings, brass, and whistles create a lovely color palette. “Valle Crucis” is a somewhat more somber duet for piano and whistle. About halfway into the piece, strings enter and lighten the mood to a more dancelike spirit. “Water of Life” is a touching song in the folk tradition about deeply-affecting experiences shared by father and son. “Moses Owl” is a favorite. Named for a Cherokee friend who told Bill’s father about The Trail of Tears, a tragic chapter in our nation’s history, the piece is dark and passionate. The title track is about the spiritual bond Bill made with his father during this project. Warm and tranquil, love flows from each of the notes. “Climb That Mountain” is a joyful and enthusiastic ode to hiking. “Great Eyrie” is another favorite. Guitar and whistle describe vast open space and awe-inspiring mountains, while orchestration adds colors and scope. “Attacoa” is another “big” piece that paints vivid pictures with a variety of musical instruments. What an inspiring musical journey!

“Blue Ridge Reunion” is a wonderful listening experience that tells of places and events both large and small, but all very powerful and affecting in their own way. The music is sure to delight and uplift! Recommended!!!

Blue Ridge Reunion
The first time I listen to a new CD, I don\'t look at the song titles and just react to the music. In this case, I found myself lying in the grass watching the clouds, or walking alongside a quiet lake and seeing the eagles soaring on the wind overhead, or coming out of the shade of a forest and being stunned by the majestic view of a mountain range or a spectacular waterfall. At one time, I found my heart beating rapidly with what felt like fierce pride in one minute, then sinking into melancholy the next. I later learned that what I was experiencing was the trek my Cherokee ancestors made along the Trail of Tears. It was fun to take a ride on the \"Mountain Train,\" and my foot was patting as I \"watched\" others \"Climb That Mountain.\" It was only after listening through the first time and then looking at the titles of the songs that I realized Bill Leslie had, indeed, \"painted\" his father\'s pictures in music! I listened through the CD the second time, and felt my eyes fill with tears as Bill experienced his \"Blue Ridge Reunion\" with his dad. How wonderful that a son would remember his father with such love. The sounds of nature and the harmonies added to some of the songs are very nice touches. When you put it all together, this is a beautiful collection of songs for any music lover! I can hardly wait to get the companion book so I can look at Mr. Leslie\'s paintings while listening to Bill\'s musical interpretation of what his father let us see through his talented eyes. Bill and his dad make a great team!

Another Masterpiece!
With his latest album release, Blue Ridge Reunion, Bill Leslie has yet again shared with us the gift of his amazing musical talent. From the light and cheery fun of “Mountain Train” to the quiet intensity of “Great Eyrie”, Bill takes us along with him on a journey inspired by his late father’s love of art and nature. Bill’s compositions are at times majestically inspirational, other times sweetly personal as he paints melodic pictures of the places and events that make up his poignant memories. If you have not yet experienced the vocal and compositional talents of Bill Leslie, Blue Ridge Reunion is the perfect place to start. Just don’t be surprised if you eventually end up owning all of his albums…
