ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Simple Beauty was named Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of 2010.
International radio hosts voted this 14 track compilation as tops in its category. Voting was compiled by zonemusicreporter.com

It’s been said that great melodies are never produced. They are born. They rise up out of joy. They germinate from seeds of sorrow. They set sail on wings of love.

Some of the world’s greatest melodies have emerged from the Celtic cauldron of Scotland and Ireland. These songs are blessed with a simple beauty, honesty and grace.

This album titled "Simple Beauty," took root with four ancient Gaelic melodies I learned from mentor Micheal O’Domhnaill of Ireland. They are songs that excite my Scotch Irish DNA. Pianist Bill Covington and I carved out fresh instrumental arrangements for the four tunes. Then I let them marinate in my soul for a while. Eventually they helped me give birth to a new set of tunes which I have featured in this collection.

Celtic fiddler Jamie Laval may have said it best: “When I play truly from the heart, the music of countless past generations becomes my own voice. It’s romance too deep for words and passion too deep for tears.”

The RajMan Review
Picking a title for a film, book, CD, or any work of art can be a tricky thing because it can come back to bite the artist, especially in the form of critics who are chomping at the bit to turn pun-ready titles into dreadful displays of derision. Composer and musician Bill Leslie has picked one such title for his new CD, but thankfully, it can do no wrong because, although Leslie may not have intended it, it perfectly describes the quality of his latest recording.

Leslie was probably inspired by the beauty from the vantage point of his mountain retreat near the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina’s Glade Valley, which gets its own musical tribute here. Still, the album title is an apt appraisal of the musical aesthetic sculpted by Leslie and his studio cohorts.

The CD is perfect from beginning to end. The music will wash over you and enrapture you with its lyrical and melodic beauty. Compositionally, many of the songs were inspired by some of Leslie’s favorite Celtic artists, including Nightnoise and Clannad. Even with the Celtic influence, though, the music has a very distinctive Americana feel to it.

Leslie is not only a brilliant composer, but an excellent musician as well. He plays Celtic whistles, acoustic guitar, bass, piano, and keyboards. Not surprisingly, the acoustic guitar dominates, especially since, judging by the artwork of the CD packaging, the acoustic guitar appears to be Leslie’s favorite instrument. Leslie is also joined by Bill Covington on grand piano, Brent Cotten on acoustic guitar, Leslie’s son Will on percussion, Jennifer Curtis on violin, Nancy Green on cello, and Linda Metz on flute. The result is music that is so hypnotically absorbing in its lush richness that it is easy to forget the technical prowess of the players.

This is a CD that most people should enjoy. It will touch their hearts just as it was touched by Bill Leslie’s heart, especially considering the musical expressions of personal aspects of his life, including his daughter and his new canine companion. It is warm, pleasant, and inviting. It is also enriching, inspiring, and uplifting. This is musical nourishment for the soul.

Bill Leslie finds Simple Beauty
Bill Leslie has a sensational new release that is truly a refreshing experience for the senses and one new release I feel certain people of all ages will enjoy listening to. Simple Beauty is the name Bill Leslie gave his personified current album and just as assuring like the title suggests, a natural attraction of refined beauty becomes the harmonious ingredient everyone will find within. While Bill Leslie is easily recognized as a composing musician and leader of his traditional and Celtic fusion music group Lorica, he is also a 5 time Emmy Award winning journalist and newscaster for WRAL television network and a multiple Journalist of the Year awards recipient in North Carolina. In addition he composes traditional and Celtic fusion music as a soloist and during concert appearances with his band Lorica. In fact Bill Leslie was an early roommate and helpful mentor to popular musician, radio, television, and Entertainment Tonight Show host John Tesh. These good friends have recently had the opportunity to perform together again during a September 2010 concert at Meymandi Hall in the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Simple Beauty is the 2010 all instrumental album now charting in the number 1 position for the month of September at ZMR and reflects the inspirational countryside of The Carolinas, along with a personal improvised structuring Bill had conceived after his studies with renowned Irish musician Michael O’Domhnaill and his Celtic influences. On the Simple Beauty release Bill composed 10 original songs patterned in accordance with 4 traditional ancient Irish melodies so the composition in entirety results in a highly melodic blend of Instrumental New Age with a Celtic alliance that is harmoniously arranged with a done just right perfection. Like his early debut Peaceful Journey, which received a number 1 ranking on ZMR World Music charts, Bill’s current has all the hallmarks of reaching equal success. Christmas in Carolina was named Best Holiday Album and I am a River charted number 2 and also contain some wonderful instrumentals. Blue Ridge Reunion was another album that secured a number 1 position with Zone Music Reporter charts, along with the year ending honors of being named Best Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year in 2008. An instrumentalist at heart, Bill Leslie performs acoustic guitar, piano, bass, whistles and keyboards. The musicians in accompaniment on this album are Bill Covington on Grand Piano, Brent Cotton on Acoustic Guitar, Jennifer Curtis on Violin, Nancy Green on cello, Will Leslie on percussion and Linda Metz on flute. Simple Beauty is an appropriately titled work of harmony whose scenic wonder and peaceful surroundings emerge by the truly great instrumentals, making this current natural and wholesome new release a sensational find for everyone.

REVIEWS NEW AGE

Esencial!

Me gusta!.

Me gusta!.

Me gusta!.

The only way to be alive
Is feeling the joy of life

The music of Bill Leslie speaks the very understandable and easy language. It is filled with joy and beauty.

Bill Leslie weaves weightless laces of sparkling melodies. His music cannot leave the listener indifferent. One wants to celebrate the life and to start dancing with these very touching and heartfelt compositions.

Scots Irish roots of Bill Leslie are felt in the every note of the album “Simple Beauty” and this gives a special charm to his music. Bill Leslie performs his original instrumental compositions as well as interpretations of four traditional tunes. And all they take the listener away sorrows and disappointments in order to bring him the flavor of love and hope for the better instead.

Bill Leslie music reminds me of great works of the Windham Hill Records such as the albums of Nightnoise or William Ackerman.

Acoustic guitars of Bill Leslie and Brent Cotten, grand piano of Bill Covington, flute of Linda Metz, violin of Jennifer Curtis, cello of Nancy Green and percussion of Will Leslie are united into a single whole. Compositions played by these gentle acoustic instruments are perfectly arranged. And they sound very fresh and soft.

Bill Leslie made a great work to let his music to be born and performed. His release “Simple Beauty” is like a shining star which illuminates the path to love and compassion.
