AUTHOR

In addition to his four CDs and live concert DVDs, Lightnin’ Charlie has also recently become
a published author. That’s right…a published author!

His autobiography, OFF THE RECORD The Trials and Tribulations of a Travelin’ Troubadour, is a collection of hilarious short stories and anecdotes from his experiences as a touring musician and reformed saloon singer. This amazing Christian testimony of a local boy made good, OFF THE RECORD is now in its 2nd edition and is available in over 18,000 bookstores worldwide, and is Lightnin’ Charlie’s unique version of the Greatest Story Ever Told.

“Hilarious! Not only does Lightnin' Charlie possess a very wry sense of humor and loquacious literary style, but on every subject, he is both painfully honest and tenderly compassionate. Lightnin' Charlie’s Off The Record presents an extraordinary variety of daily encounters that tell moving tales of all too ordinary madness. It is outrageous and sad, poignant, politically incorrect, and most of all laugh-out-loud funny ...which is all just another way of saying it is vintage Lightnin' Charlie.”
– Harmonica Todd Levine, Chicago Bluesman

UPCOMING CD RELEASES

Lightnin’ is currently working on two upcoming CDs: Lightnin’ Charlie Songbook – Family
Album Volume Two, and the long-awaited tour-de-force gospel CD, Good News.

KUDOS

"Lightnin' Charlie is a veritable icon here in the Mountain Empire. Everyone who has the opportunity to see and hear Lightnin' perform is astounded by his talent and showmanship - this man really knows how to entertain a crowd! And when this amazing husband and wife team [Lightnin' Charlie and Beth] raise their voices in harmony to praise the Lord in song, the sound they produce is nothing short of perfection. Charlie can pick and sing everything from Country to Gospel, Rock 'n' Roll to the Blues, and he does it as well as anyone on the planet. Lightnin' Charlie is one of the most entertaining, yet down-to-earth guys around,
and if you have never seen him in concert, you're missing out on something really special!" – PickinPorch.org

At a recent concert where Hall of Famer Ricky Scaggs was in attendance, a fan asked Ricky about Lightnin’ and Beth, who were onstage singing. She asked Ricky, “Don’t they sound good?” “No”, Ricky answered, “they sound GREAT!” High praise that.

“There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who love Lightnin' Charlie, and those who haven't had the good fortune to hear him yet. The next time he's going to be performing at a venue near you, you owe it to yourself to go see him in action. And if he isn't in your area, go anyway. A Lightnin' Charlie show is always worth the drive!” - RLRouse.com

“It's one thing to know how to sing. It's quite another to know how to entertain! Lightnin' Charlie knows how to do both exceptionally well. Lightnin' Charlie brought his guitar and his smooth, quivering voice onto the Pickin' Porch stage last night and treated the audience to one of the most entertaining musical performances you'll ever see. East Tennessee’s Pickin Porch is famous for its wonderful Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music shows, and Lightnin' Charlie can perform those genres with the best of them. But his shows offer more - lots more! He can go straight from Hank Williams and Marty Robbins to Elvis and Johnny Cash to the Beatles and Otis Redding to Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King without skipping a beat. Part of the fun of a Lightnin' Charlie show is never knowing what's coming next - but you know it's gonna be great! The Bristol area and the entire Birthplace Of Country Music region is overflowing with talented performers in all musical genres, but Lightnin' Charlie has most of them covered all by himself." - PickinPorch.org

But where did all this start? Let's go back to the beginning...

Lightnin’ Lore – A Biography

Lightnin' Charlie Dolinger was born in Miami Beach, Florida, nine months after lightning struck the steeple of a church where a small wedding was taking place. The startled groom, Sidney, was a restaurateur and amateur piano bar singer from Palm Beach, Florida. The blushing bride, Barbara Ann, grew up in East Tennessee during the Great Depression and WWII. Barbara had been a popular, touring child evangelist, and even had her own radio show by the time she was eleven years old. Baby Lightnin' (nicknamed Chip when he was young because, according to his father, he was a "chip off the old block") was destined to follow in both of his parents' footsteps.

Lightnin' Charlie got his first guitar, a gift from his father, when he was nine years old and spent the next nine years learning to play, by ear, his favorite songs by the Beatles, Creedence, Sam Cooke, and Elvis. It was during these formidable years that young Lightnin' learned virtually every song from the 50s and 60s that would later become the foundation for his formidable and world-renowned repertoire.

LC's Aunt Jeanette was a good friend of Elvis' Aunt Lorraine and, as a teenager, Jeanette spent a lot of time at Graceland with Elvis and his family. Aunt Jeanette used to tell and retell stories of hanging out with the pre-Army Elvis to a wide-eyed and impressionable teenager, her nephew, the once and future Lightnin' Charlie. The impact these stories had on a young Lightnin' cannot be overstated. Charlie was later to have a fine career combining several genres of American Roots music styles - Blues and Country, Rock 'n' Roll and Gospel. The fact is, that Lightnin' Charlie learned that unique ability to merge and meld contrasting musical styles, from the first one to accomplish that impossible feat - the greatest of them all, Elvis Presley.

In 1979, after graduating high school and losing his beloved father to cancer, Charlie moved to East Tennessee to go to college. But the education he received was not found in books. He honed his craft, learning to sing and guitar sling in a hard-core Chicago-style blues band called the Southside Sheiks.

After breaking out on his own in 1989, fronting his own band The Upsetters, Lightnin' Charlie quickly made quite a name for himself, while relentlessly touring the underbelly of the American South, the rough and dangerous world of biker bars, nightclubs, and honky tonks - venues LC calls the "buckets o' blood" and "cut 'n' stabs". Needless to say, his university education soon gave way to the school of hard knocks and Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters were paying their dues and getting noticed.

"I've been to every one of these (National Blues Talent Contest, Memphis, TN), and Lightnin' Charlie might be the hottest guitarist they've ever had. He's got Stevie Ray Vaughan written all over him."- ESP Entertainment Guide

"This band has the potential to break out big. They won the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society's Talent Contest, in competition with bands from five states. They've appeared from Miami to Memphis to Chicago and wowed 'em everywhere." - Focus Magazine

"Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters play the blues like the masters." - Little Chicago Blues Festival Newsletter

"Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters held court for over an hour (at Memphis Blues Festival) and nearly burned down the house. They placed 3rd in the Blues Foundation's National Blues Contest, and should have won." - Memphis Music Monthly

"A unique combination of gutsy vocals, smokin' guitar, and high-energy showmanship. Lightnin' Charlie was simply amazing - not because he'd play his guitar behind his head and with his teeth, but because of the way he could make it sound. An exceptional guitarist."- Carolina Blues Festival Newsletter

In the 1990s, Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters released two very highly-acclaimed CDs, his self-titled debut Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters in 1994 and Don't Touch That Dial! in 1997.

"This band tackles everything from Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo, and Magic Sam to Solomon Burke and does so in a way that pays homage to these greats without resorting to slavish imitation and with a raw and infectious energy that's hard to resist. Charlie imbues every track with the power and instinctive feeling of someone who has a natural rapport with the genre. A must for all major blues festivals."- Blues and Rhythm Magazine (England)

Lightnin' Charlie and the Upsetters continued touring, continued tearing it up, and continued garnering rave reviews everywhere with his one-of-a-kind showmanship and sound.

"Lightnin' Charlie's charismatic stage persona and off-the-wall guitar antics grab an audience's attention like a snake-handling preacher."- Creative Loafer Magazine

"At Miami's Tobacco Road, Lightnin' blazed through some 12-bar blues gems and put on a show that too many missed. Lightnin' Charlie Dolinger is a stinging guitarist." - Living Blues Magazine

"Bottomless repertoire and enough on-stage warmth to melt the ice in your drink." - TriCities.Com

But Lightnin' Charlie wasn't happy making beautiful music only on his records. In 1997, he met and married his dream come true, a gorgeous, twenty-three year old Virginia girl named Beth, who came from a musical family and whose harmony singing was every bit as angelic and enchanting as she was.

After twenty years of fearlessly rocking roadhouses, Lightnin' turned over a new leaf in 2005. With the release of A New Leaf, the CD that must be considered his masterpiece and the musical culmination of three decades on the road, Lightnin' Charlie finally retired from playing the nightclubs and the bars. Reviews for A New Leaf were spectacular worldwide.

"A stellar collection. 'A New Leaf' contains so many great cuts, it's hard to single out simply one or two as standouts. 'A New Leaf' shines as bright and bold as autumn colors."- Bristol Herald Courier

"Lightnin' Charlie covers some all-time blues classics with sheer magnificence [on 'A New Leaf'] and his five original songs are polished with creative soul, rock and harmony. The boppin' tunes on 'A New Leaf' could bring joy to watching paint dry."- News And Neighbor

"The best blues-based CD I have ever heard, including all the classic recordings. There is always some deficiency in all records, but not in this one. Listening to 'A New Leaf' from beginning to end is truly a musical experience."- Blue Rapture

"An authentic American original, Lightnin' Charlie, with his Stetson hat and Fender Stratocaster, has hit the mark with a FANTASTIC new CD, 'A New Leaf' on Blue Chip Records. GREAT ALBUM!"- ROOTSTIME (Belgium)

"A powerful, polished and fresh original release ['A New Leaf']. Atomic-powered roots music, somewhere between classic rock 'n' roll and Chicago blues. Vibrant remakes and superb originals. In an age where the Americana genre has become increasingly commercialized and more bloated than ever, here is a release that is purely American."- Loafer Magazine

"Rockin' swamp blues and rock 'n' roll just as I like it. Lightnin' Charlie's 'A New Leaf' doesn't have a weak song on it. Can't wait for his next CD."- Le Cri Du Coyote (The Coyote Cry), France

When Lightnin' retired from playing the roadhouses, he retired into a whole new career. Capitalizing on the strength of A New Leaf, Lightnin' Charlie re-invented himself as a consummate solo acoustic performer, gospel singer, and showroom attraction. Lightnin' Charlie turned over a new leaf and began burning up a brand new career, performing with and without the Upsetters, in theaters and music festivals, charity fundraisers and churches, concert halls and civic centers, private parties and wedding receptions, senior centers and nursing homes.

Good music for good people became LC's mantra and motto. In addition to his many other venues, Lightnin' Charlie currently performs 200 shows per year in senior facilities, musically ministering to members of the Greatest Generation, and making a real difference in the lives of others.

2008 saw LC re-invent himself yet again, this time as a published author. Off The Record - The Trials and Tribulations of a Travelin' Troubadour tells the wild and crazy story of Lightnin' Charlie's life as a musician, and its many dangers, toils, and snares. These tall tales, some very violent and raw, some very poignant, and all hilariously funny, are Lightnin's madcap memoir of a multitude of misadventures, and are ultimately his testimony as a born again Christian. LC tells first-hand how Almighty God has delivered him from the desert and into the Promised Land. It is a wonderful, unique, and personal version of the Greatest Story Ever Told.

Off The Record quickly became a sensation and added a whole new legion of fans to his already considerable cast of loyal and adoring devotees ("Lightnin' Bugs" as Charlie lovingly calls them). Off The Record is currently in its 2nd Edition and in over 18,000 bookstores worldwide and has received more rave reviews for this remarkable Renaissance Man of Song.

"Hilarious! Not only does Lightnin' Charlie possess a very wry sense of humor and loquacious literary style, but on every subject, he is both painfully honest and tenderly compassionate. Lightnin' Charlie's Off The Record presents an extraordinary variety of daily encounters that tell moving tales of all too ordinary madness. It is outrageous and sad, poignant, politically incorrect, and most of all laugh-out-loud funny...which is all just another way of saying it is vintage Lightnin' Charlie."- Harmonica Todd Levine, Chicago Blues Harp Master

"Lightnin' Charlie has an unbelievable talent for music and it shows - not only through his incredible guitar playing and singing, but also through his knowledge of almost every song ever written! You would think that God must have given Charlie his full quota of talent...but noooo. In addition, Charlie is an artist - painting a picture full of emotion with words, through his gift of storytelling. His satires, rants and raves, and his reflections on life have become a sensation on his website and are now complete in Off The Record. What amazes me is that no matter what soapbox Charlie finds himself on, his character and love for God always shines through. He is my friend and brother, and I always cheerfully anticipate his next passionate tirade! You, the reader, are in for a real treat."- Rev. Elbert Charpie, First Baptist Church of Citronelle

"Lightnin' Charlie delivers again! I've been a fan of his music for years and Off The Record gives us an inside look at the origins of his lifelong quest for making music (what he calls 'good music for good people'), and provides marvelous insights into the crazy carnival of events that made him into the man he is today. Wouldn't it be great if MORE Americans were so observant, in-tune, well versed, and 'hip-to-the-tip' as Lightnin' Charlie? I think so. And I believe they will be - after reading this book!"- Tim Rouse, RCO3 Inc., Author of The Delmer Green Series

2010 brought in a brand new decade and a brand new gospel CD for Lightnin' Charlie. Trust In God - Family Album Volume One is the first in a series of Family Albums on Blue Chip Records. Showcasing the sterling harmonies of Lightnin' and his wife Beth, Trust In God is an all-acoustic, old-school gospel record that features LC on guitar and piano.

"When this amazing husband and wife team [Lightnin' Charlie and Beth] raise their voices in harmony to praise the Lord in song, the sound they produce is nothing short of perfection." - pickinporch.org

A true 21st Century Renaissance Man, Lightnin' Charlie has been voted "Favorite Musician or Group" and "Favorite Artist" in the Mountain South for six years in a row by the readers of Marquee Magazine.

LC continues to perform an amazing 300 shows per year. This is a testament to his talent, his commitment to his fans, and his consistently bringing the goods. The fact that he can accomplish all this, in his own hometown, without incessant travel, and still be at home eating dinner with his family every night and tucking his children into their beds is completely unheard of among full-time musicians, and is another thing that makes Lightnin' Charlie unique among professional entertainers. It is also a testament to what can happen when you let go and let God.

Lightnin' Charlie Dolinger, singer and entertainer, recording artist and author, musician and bandleader, is most of all, a devoted family man to his wife, two sons, and baby daughter. In his own words, "Lightnin' Charlie is what I do, but child of God, husband, and father is what I am."

"Lightnin' Charlie is a veritable icon here in the Mountain Empire. Everyone who has the opportunity to see and hear Lightnin' perform is astounded by his talent and showmanship. It's one thing to know how to play and sing, but it's quite another to know how to entertain. Charlie can pick and sing everything from Country to Rock 'n' Roll, Gospel to the Blues, and he does it as well as anyone on the planet. Lightnin' Charlie is one of the most talented, yet down-to-earth guys around, and if you have never seen him in concert, you're missing out on something really special! One of the most entertaining musical performances you'll ever see."
