Lisa Green and her husband, Mike, have served as the lead worshippers at Sanctuary Ministries in the SF Bay Area for 12 years. She is an independent singer/songwriter, as well as a homeschooling mom of two young daughters. She writes for congregational worship as well as inspirational and devotional songs. “Come Away with Me” is an opportunity to share some of the latter.
Lisa has been a passionate follower of Christ from a young age. In August of 2006, she had a “burning bush” experience followed by several encounters with the Lord that dramatically effected her. One of the by-products of this experience was an explosion in her songwriting. Another was a new fascination with the Biblical book of Song of Solomon as it paralleled the personal revelation and “awakening” happening in her own prayer life. This EP is a collection of 7 songs that specifically tie in with Song of Solomon and Lisa’s intimate pursuit of the Lord.
Why Song of Solomon? Song of Solomon illuminates the Bridal Paradigm between Christ and His Church woven throughout much of scripture. The Bridegroom pursues His Beloved and as He continues to profess her loveliness and His seeming blindness to her faults, she begins to let her walls come down and receives her “beloved-ness.” Her revelation of “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine” causes her to give her love and life to Him, pursuing Him wholeheartedly. Solomon describes her as having “doves eyes” - a singleness of affection and devotion. Lisa writes: “I believe a deeper study of Song of Solomon reveals several stages of maturity to intimacy with the Lord and challenges the believer to not be satisfied with yesterday’s depths but to press on in relationship with Him and to continually grow in union with the Lover of our Soul.”
In 2007, Lisa began the process of recording at home. It was an uphill climb of acquiring and learning recording equipment and the recording process, while having an infant and toddler in tow. For this EP, Keys, live drums, bass, and various synth instrumentation were recorded in this way. Vocals, acoustic and electric guitars (the more unforgiving instruments) as well as added instrumentation were recorded at One Way Studio with Masaki, where the songs were also mixed and mastered. Interestingly, it was discovered the EP’s musical date of completion was unintentionally 5 years to the day that she first journaled the Lord was leading her to record.
While most of the songs on “Come Away with Me” focus on the inward life, the 6th song “You’ve Been My Love,” written for Lisa’s husband, pulls into the theme the aspect that our inward lives bear fruit on the outside. Our purpose is not only to love God but to love others and be the reality of Him on earth. Lisa says, “I believe as the Church grows in the truth of her loveliness to Jesus, there will be a widespread impact on the face of the earth through love that the gates of hell could not prevail against.”
