Album Notes
“Lisangaa” translates literally from the Bantu dialect as “a peaceful gathering” and symbolically as a unity of divergent elements. What started as a gathering of friends in Nairobi has evolved beyond the vocal harmonies and percussion patterns of East Africa to incorporate Western Jazz, Folk, Reggae, and Near Eastern rhythms into a true fusion of World Music. As most of the original cast of Lisangaa moved on to other projects, the band went through a renaissance by blending new musicians, styles, and philosophies. Lisangaa’s members hail from extremely diverse musical backgrounds culminating in a uniquely progressive sound that ultimately redefines the genre of world music. The current project has re-interpreted old songs and chants and weaved in new material along with previously unexplored styles to produce an album as diverse and multi-faceted as the members themselves.

The original project began in 1984 in Kenya, and in 1987 they played on national TV around the theme of tribal unity. In 1992 they emigrated to the US under the name “Upendo Singers” and played for CNN and in many festivals around California. Most of the members left to LA, while one of the singers, Kamonde Lubembe, stayed in Stanislaus County to open “Central Valley Foster Care” in Riverbank in order to give back to the community. In 2005 he re-formed Lisangaa once again, and the current line up has been together since then. Lisangaa began recording in 2005, and the debut album “Pangea” was released in November 2007. Lisangaa also donates a portion of every album to local children’s charities.

I have bought this CD but would like to know who these guys are. They indeed are Bantu as my dad can recognise the language. However, I have difficulties in trying to find out which clan they are from by just looking at them!!!I happen to have a Bantu father and a Shirazi mother. My Luhya is not that good but my Swahili and Arabic is flawless. My dad and I listened to them and we think they might be either Isukha, Tiriki or Idakho. Kisa, Marama, Batsotso and Marach are a possibility. Someone with good knowledge tell me what is going on. These guys look like they are "Wazungus" except for the one guy whom of course I can recognize his Luhya features. The guy with Mau Mau hair reminds me of Bob Marley. He looks like a blend of the Hamitic tribes and a Mzungu. I really like these guys but have no clue as to who they are. I have been living in self-imposed exile in Alaska for scientific research reasons. I come out and we now have a Band talking about what I have preached for years, TRIBAL UNITY!!!! lISANGA, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND I WILL SUPPORT YOUR EFFORTS! I leave Anchorage next month but will keep you posted as to where I am working from. I will probably be lecturing in CA for some time early next year. Hope to meet you guys. Does any one have any Youtube songs for this CD? I searched and did not find any. I GIVE YOU GUYS A THUMBS UP AND FIVE STARS!!!

I'm amazed at how diverse this album is. It's such a joy to come across something truly original and unique. Much of World Music can be repetitive, but this album has so many hooks and melodies that I'm reminded of Gigi and others that have incorporated strong arrangements. Great Job!!

This album is phenomenal! It has a great flow from beginning to end. Truly a must have for my world music collection.

Fantastic. I've been watching these guys for years. I got the album and it's now my favorite.
Can't wait for the next show!

Wow! This alblum is my new world music fave! It definitely will be enjoyed by those who appreciate uplifting, moving, interesting music.

Wow! You can't sit still while you are listening to this gotta get up and dance. Very fun and happy music. I would love to see this stuff preformed live.

Wow - Gotta Get It
I love this album! I listen to it over and over again and find it refreshing each time. The variety of instrumentation is spectacular and the vocal richness is soul-satisfying. Even the way the songs end is striking and leaves you wanting to hear more.
