ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Liz Frencham- Bio

“Frencham has a voice with all the appeal, emotional honesty and clarity of someone like Shawn Colvin or Mary Chapin Carpenter. Yes, really, she is that good.”Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald music reviewer.

Liz Frencham is a veteran of festival stages across the country (with acts like Jigzag, Frencham Smith & Devlish Mary). She easily traverses genres from folk and bluegrass through to jazz and blues with gentle expertise and plenty of good humoured banter to accompany the journey.

Embracing her double bass like a lover, Liz invites you along a journey through a luminous emotional landscape, reassuring you with a warm, generous voice and a smile which has become her trademark.

Currently, Liz is readying a new musical project for the festival stage. “Red Juliet” is collaboration with masterful guitarist and songwriter Myles White. Together they release a deep, jazz-inflected, soul-drenched sound; exquisitely fragile and spacious. Their debut e.p. is set for an autmn 2011 release.
Liz studied Jazz performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music & has been working full time as a musician for over ten years. She is an experienced session double-bassist & vocalist who has been employed by professional musicians across the country and even internationally. Her natural habitat, however, is the stage.  She has become an audience favourite on the music festival circuit whether performing alone, with Sydney band Jigzag,  award winning songwriter Fred Smith,  Melbourne’s first all girl Old Timey outfit Dev’lish Mary, iconic vaudeville showman Mic Conway or 2010 National Flat pick guitar champion Robbie Long.

In 2005 she celebrated the launch of her debut solo album ‘Jericho’- a rich & varied work full of her perceptive songs & including contributions from Waifs drummer David Ross Macdonald, Sydney jazz pianist Michael Bartholomei & rising star Jodi Martin. It was a finalist for the ‘Presenter’s Choice’ award at the 2007 Australian Folk Alliance Convention.

In 2008 she released “You & Me, Vol.1” an album of live duets with many well known performers (including the likes of Doug DeVries, Mic Conway, Carl Pannuzzo & Shannon Barnett) which earned several rave reviews including one from QLD writer & ABC radio personality Sandy Mc Cutcheon:

“From the opening notes of Liz Frencham’s CD you & me Vol. 1 you know you are in for a rare treat. At times the music floats as gently as a breeze from a moth’s wings at others Liz soars like a butterfly on steroids – but always with great sensitivity and beauty. All of which is made more extraordinary by the fact that she is playing the double bass. Such an instrument asks a lot of a musician. It is not simply plucked, bowed and stroked by Frencham. Her double bass is an extension of her body and indeed to watch her play is to watch an erotic performance where musician and instrument are as one...
Playing, composing and singing; this girl has it all. The only note of caution – put the bottle of wine beside you because once Liz Frencham has you, she doesn’t let go – not for a minute.”

"Liz Frencham is one of the more welcome presences at any musical event. Liz is a fine bassist, an expressive singer and a skilled writer of songs. As a performer she is generous, always "on", always fully engaged. Her musical vocabulary and comfort zone are conspicuously wide. The two contexts in which I've most frequently seen Liz - Frencham Smith & Jigzag - are both rewarding, but in very different ways. She's also a splendid & supportive guest. It's very easy to see why so many other people at any given festival invite her to join them on stage."

Doug Spencer, producer, 'The Planet', ABC Radio National
