ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The title track of Afterglow has an easy feeling, a funky Curtis Mayfield-style guitar break and, I believe, the only vocal sounds on a Lomo track to date. The overall effect reminds me of Santana’s Borboletta period, before an accordion-like bandeneon comes in adding a French flair toward the end. The bandoneon ends up playing a major role in each song on Afterglow. Two versions of “Blind Pew” provide a study in differences in rhythmic emphasis. On Painkiller, “Sharkness” clocked in at slightly less than four minutes; here we are treated to a deluxe version filled out to nearly ten minutes. While Lomo’s ethic is generally characterized by discipline and economy, this extended version of “Sharkness” allows for plenty of organic exploration beyond the structure of the song. Lomo plays an immediate, unpretentious jazz/rock/funk hybrid that blows away the bloated fusion stereotype.

Alexandros Galanos

Etherial Jazz/funk
Afterglow is another brilliant release from Lomo, containing 3 alternative versions of pieces from their album "Painkiller", as well as the title track "Afterglow" which is not contained in the album and is worth having. The track "Afterglow" is mesmerising with its combination of bandoneon and etherial sounding vocals, followed firstly by a more laid down version of "Blind Pew" , a wonderful slow tune with a clever interplay between guitar and bandoneon, and secondly by a shorter and more upbeat version of the same track. The last piece on the cd, is a longer version of "Sharkness", which starts with a psychedelic electric guitar phazer effect and totally absorbs the listener into a smooth and narcotic musical journey, the bandonean taking the lead unobtrusively through the length of the piece, it sounds like a very nice dream, as it finishes you will not want to wake up. Amazing musicianship.
