Album Notes
Ranging in musical style from beautifully haunting and simple, to having flamenco, blues and gospel grooves, Lorraine and Tony—longtime friends and fellow musicians in bands throughout the years, finally collaborated on recording a Christmas album after talking about it for 15 long years! They also invited several of their musician friends to contribute their talents on the recordings as well.

They both felt they wanted to breathe some new life into the old, but still loved carols, rather than focusing on contemporary songs that are usually recorded. The oldest on the album date from the 14th century on up to the newest one from the Appalachians in the 1930's. As the recording process continued, some of the tunes spontaneously took shape in the studio while others were more carefully thought out and planned.

Tony Unger plays both nylon and steel stringed acoustic guitar with years of experience in the flamenco, classical and rock world. He's also working on a new solo album due out next year.

Lorraine Gervais has sung R&B, jazz, soul and blues for years, is in several bands and continues to produce a long running vintage concert series with the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

Something different this Christmas
They told me this album was 15 years in the making and in a way it shows: the warmth and dedication are palpable in each track. Tony Unger's arrangement of this unlikely set of Christmas songs is very tasteful, and his clear and sensitive performance adds much to this. Lorraine Gervais's vocals are warm and soulful and make the familiar lyrics feel fresh again. For my taste this album really shines in the more folksy, older songs like Bring A Torch, Gabriel's Message and the Wexford Carol. Another highlight is the funky rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. This album with mostly mellow songs is not your average Holiday album, yet it captures the spirit of Christmas quite nicely!

Love it!
This is an amazingly beautiful album. It gives a refreshing twist on some of my favorite carols and introduced some "new" favorites! I don't want to turn it off!

Beautiful music
Soulful fantastic arrangements by true artists! This album is on heavy rotation this season, a pleasure to listen to. Very cool!

Definitely buy this CD
‘A Light In Winter’ by Lorraine Gervais and Tony Unger is a superb collection of Christmas Songs presented with elements of jazz, but also colored with many older musical influences, reflecting the various time periods these songs were written in. Gervais’ singing and Unger’s guitar work are both solid, but delicate in a way that creates a warm and intimate setting for the listener to enjoy this varied collection of seasonal music.

Put another log on the fire...
Put another log on the fire; pour a cup of hot cider; lean back and close your eyes....what a pleasant surprise! If it's
snowing outside, all the better. This is not a Jingle Bells or a Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Christmas CD. What it is, is a compilation of beautiful tunes, some dating back to the 14th century and 1930's. Each piece in "Songs of Christmas Past" is a unique collaboration and wonderful blending of talents. Every time you play "A Light in Winter," you will discover something new. You will never tire of the incredible talents of Tony Unger, Lorraine Gervais and friends. They will become a part of your family for many Christmases to come.

This album gives a refreshing twist on some of my favorite carols and introduces some "new" favorites! The guitar playing is especially amazing! This is by far my favorite holiday CD for this holiday season!

Beautiful arrangements of songs from the past
If you are tired of Christmas/holiday albums that warn you Santa Claus is coming...you will LOVE this one because it is nothing like that. The song selections from the past are made to feel new again with the talents of Lorraine Gervais' exquisitely velvet voice, and Tony Unger's stellar guitar talent. Each song is unique, beautiful, and really transcends Christmas. This is an album I will continue to listen to throughout the year. It's just that special and good.
