the songs : Emergency Exits - I was watching a documentary about plane crashes. One commentator said she always counted the number of seats to the nearest emergency exit. This made me think of childhood. Whenever I was taken to see a film, or show, usually with my school, we would be stuck in a strange, dark auditorium, which felt unfamiliar, if not scarey. One of the first things my eyes usualy rested on were the luminous exit signs, that always glowed in the dark. This was reassuring in a peculiar way. These feelings never exactly leave entirely. And I was trying to capture that mixture of fear and security.
When You Look Back - Is self explanatory, I think. It is someone who is looking back on their life. This person is relieved that certain things have been dealt with, that certain events have passed, yet realises that not everything has been within his ( or her ) control, and that it is still a struggle to make sense of it all.
Cool Glade - This is about a place near where I live. It is literally a gool glade. It is a heavily wooded area, wedged between two hills, overlooking the sea. It is peaceful, mysterious and rugged.
Pieces of Sky - There is a country road nearby. This is pockmarked by potholes. They always fill with water after the rain. And they give a perfect reflection of the sky above. This almost makes them look like glimpses of the sky as seen through the Earth, if that makes sense, ( in the same way you might see the light through holes in a sheet when you hold it up to the daylight ).
