I grew up wanting to be a number of things. Most little girls want to be a princess. I did. I also wanted to be an archaeologist, a doctor and a detective. That was when I wasn’t daydreaming about being a singer, which was pretty much all the time. At school I was the lead in all the school plays and I studied the piano right up until after college. I started writing songs when I was fourteen. My parents were stunned when I came running down the stairs in our house in Swanley, saying,’ look what I did’. That was ‘Nightmare’. The first song I ever wrote. I started singing lessons in my last year of school and these lessons also carried on through my college years. It’s thanks to Miss Debbie Eveleigh I can sing over five octaves now.
I recorded my first CD at 15 with a guy called John, who was studying Music Tech and needed a guinea pig. We recorded, Nightmare, He’s the one and, You want me. I had 200 copies made and was sold out in three weeks. Everyone at school wanted a copy and all my family’s friends wanted one. My confidence was high.
I studied performing arts at college and graduated with Distinction. I met Cameron, a talented guitarist and producer who became a dear friend. He helped me to record my second demo, Say it with strings. This CD consisted of, Nightmare, Here, Just good friends, Watch me, summer rain and something more. I actually produced the songs on software called Q-base whilst Cameron did his thing on the guitar. This CD also sold quickly. I have performed in three Professional Operas with AQUARIUM theatrical company and in the summer of 98; was Lead Flying Monkey in a summer production of ‘The Whiz’, which was managed by Sylvia Young’s stage school in Kent (a very reputable school). The venue was the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, Kent (supposedly Mick Jagger’s hometown). All extra curricular activities which were not organised by the college I was studying at.
After College, I tried applying to Universities such as Rose Bruford and Mountview but unfortunately was turned down because they said I needed more life experience. They were right. I ended up getting jobs in admin and singing became my hobby, not really knowing what else to do with my singing.
Say it with strings found its way onto Turkish Radio thanks to a friend and into the hands of the Cheeky Girls when I met them at a works do at Lords Cricket Ground in 2005, when I worked for Dorton House blind school in Kent UK as their receptionist a few years after graduating. Whilst there, I also sang for Anita Dobson (Angie in Eastenders), Gloria Huniford, the Cheeky Girls and the Duchess of Gloucester including 300 dignitaries supporting Dorton House School for the Blind.
Then I found CDbaby, a site where musicians could sell their music. I talked to my Piano teacher, Mr Steve Ball who helped me revamp Say it with strings. The same songs plus one – Under the Covers – which became the title of the album. It is now selling on CDbaby under the name Lucy Tiffin. Back then I thought it sounded better than ‘Sarah Thomson’.
In 2005 I abseiled down a 200ft building for cancer research and in 2006 I raised £2540 for the Royal National Institute for the Blind and trekked across Cuba. In late 2006 I moved to Wales to be with my boyfriend at the time but I was only there for a year. I missed my family. We're all pretty close you see. I came home back to Kent, knowing I had left singing on the backburner. I now am looking for work, as usual in admin. I’ve got my life experience but have no wish to go back into education. I am also looking for a band. I’m really into rock and want to become the next Steve Tyler! The female version of course and without the drug habit. lol. I absolutely idolise Aerosmith. I have performed so many times but haven’t as yet actually gone out there and gigged in pubs. I’m a front woman and sitting in the pub behind a keyboard just doesn’t appeal to me. My voice has improved so much over the last couple of years and I just want to put it to use. So if you love rock, you live in Kent and you play guitar or keyboard or drums, give us an email.
Aerosmith, Led Zeplin, Guns & Roses, Rolling stones, Evanescence, Muse, Bon Jovi, Natalie Imbruglia and Cara Dillon. I was brought up on Earth Wind and Fire, George Benson, Shaka Khan, Alexander O'neil, Donna Summer and Michael Jackson.
