Album Notes
Lumina - Fractured Music

Lumina is:
Fabio Fernandes – drums
Sizão Machado - bass
Johny Murata - guitars & synths

Fractals (from latim fractus) = "broken" or "fractured".
In a colloquial usage, a fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced/size copy of the whole". Because they appear similar to all levels of magnification, fractals are often considered to be infinitely complex (in informal terms). Natural objects that partly approximate to fractals include clouds, mountain ranges, lightning bolts, river networks, trees, ferns, etc.

Lumina’s Sound = Fractals
First of all, Lumina was born as a guitar&drums duo, after only two incredible recording sessions without any rehearsals, editing and overdubs. Due to the unexpected and flaming result, Fabio and Johny decided to join forces to form Lumina. The “free-style sound” of Lumina, although at the first moment it sounds like “broken” or “fragmented” without any structure, it shows us an unexpected “organic” structure after many auditions. That’s why they choose “Fractals” as the main symbol of Lumina. Lately, after listening to the “duo” recordings, Sizão Machado joined the project. He recorded impossible bass parts, increasing the impact and effect on the Lumina’s sound.

The musicians:

Fabio Fernandes is a talented drummer with activity since the early 70’s. He performed with many important Brazilian musicians, such as Hermeto Pascoal and many others. Also he participated in several important music festivals, such as “II Bienal Internacional da Música” and “IX Festival de Inverno de Campos de Jordão”. Currently he is working with a progressive band called “Banda do Sol”.

Sizão Machado is well know all over the world by his performances with Chet Baker, Elis Regina, Herbie Memm, Chico Buarque, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Jim Hall, Ivan Lins, Randy Brecker, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira and lots of other artists, leaving a special touch wherever he plays. The conception, the rhythm, the harmonies transposed from guitar to bass, an extremely good taste and sophistication, well, all these qualities make his unique style recognized in any kind of music. And this is a privilege of very few musicians.

Johny Murata is an acoustic, electric and synth guitar player and also a composer, arranger, producer and engineer. He also plays Indian sitar and participates regularly in recordings and performances in the “world music” scenario. These mixed skills, surrounded by a strong harmony vision and freestyle improvisations, are the foundations of his musical personality.

Mr. Fusion

Great Album!!
Got this album about a year ago. I'm an avid lover of fusion, so I was expecting a lot. Throw in the free jazz and you got a great "free fusion" album. Very long songs with great lengthy improvisations. Good album!!
