ABOUT THE ALBUM
Birthed at Cornerstone Festival ’89, the members of Lust Control were forced to keep their identities a secret because Paul Q Pek and Philip Owen were already members of the popular metal band, One Bad Pig. That being said, the real force behind the band was always HM editor Doug Van Pelt. Although proud of the musical output, Doug was never happy with the mastering and packaging of the original release, and this time he was able to get it “right the second time around!”

Originally released in 1992, in 2006 fans are treated to a whopping 18 bonus tracks, including an 8 minute audio commentary track from thrash master HM editor, Doug Van Pelt. The entire This Is a Condom Nation album is also included in stereo - for the first time ever on CD!

The band made a name for themselves with their controversial lyrics, which were always over the top in humorous and disturbing ways! Lust Control takes on such topics as deliverance, grace, masturbation, and virginity.

Musically, Lust Control roar through 17 art-thrash tunes (and that’s just on We Are Not Ashamed!) with stun- gun guitars and fuzz bomb bass. Taking their punk/thrash metal hybrid seriously, you’ll find the kind of passion and influence found in such classic bands as Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Overkill, D.R.I., M.O.D., and S.O.D. Enunciated bark vocals, gang shouts galore, workmanlike guitar solos and enough melody to make the songs memorable are only a few of the discs many qualities. The adrenaline charged arrangements feature perfectly placed tempo arrangements that move from blue collar thrash to circle pit forming breakdowns, resulting in an album that you'll want to hear from start to finish every time you push "play!"

For fans of One Bad Pig, Suicidal Tendencies, Overkill…

Birthed at Cornerstone Festival ‘89, the members of Lust Control were forced to keep their identities a secret because Paul Q Pek and Phillip Owen were already members of the popular metal band, One Bad Pig. That being said, the real force behind the band was always HM editor Doug Van Pelt. Although proud of the musical output, Doug was never happy with the mastering and packaging of the original release, and this time he was able to get it “right the second time around!”

Musically
Lust Control knows how to craft a catchy tune. Full out punk-thrash is all you’re going to hear on this CD. There is very little variety at all in styles Lust Control throws at us. This isn’t really a problem considering the caliber of LC’s music though. The majority of songs clock in at less than three minutes and follow a spoken intro-speed verse-gang vocals-speed verse-gang vocals-fade out routine. Surprisingly, there is enough variety in the melodies to keep the songs separate and help them stand out on there own. "Victim of Revolution/Grace Reprise" is an example of the meatier territory the guys sometimes venture into. The guys don’t shred like one would hope for an old-school thrash disc, but are more than capable when they break things down on the rare guitar solo. Then again the whole down tuned “It’s a Small World” breakdown on “If You Fail” was great fun. One thing that did stick out was the drumming. It’s the absolute backbone of this CD musically. The booklet sucked and didn’t have the drummers name so I’ll just say he tore it up. All the way through the stops and starts and cymbal crashes he keeps up and carries the band. The production on the first seventeen tracks is crystal. Unfortunately, the live tracks and the whole “This Is A Condom Nation” set suffer from horrible production values. Apparently this CD is a step up from the original “TIACN” release. Now it’s stereo?! It all sounds like it’s being shouted and played through a tin coffee can. Huge disappointment considering how much the first seventeen tracks rocked.

Vocals/Lyrics
I have to admit, I love Van Pelt’s vocals. It’s hilarious to realize that this is the guy who’s stuff you’ve been reading in HM forever. He’s got an everyman almost talking voice. No pop-metal screeches to be found here just that old-school almost rap style of thrash singing. There is that faux British thing going on during “Virginity Disease” but it’s forgettable (and obnoxious in this reviewers humble opinion). Lyrics are more than likely where you’re either going to love LC or hate them. They do not hide what’s on their mind as “Planned Parenthood” attests to. From the over the top “The Big “M”” to the utterly disturbing “The Secret” the lyrics are where it’s at for LC. Some could argue they’re simplistic, and they are, but I say take a chill and just enjoy. As matter of fact listen and maybe be surprised at how simple some of these Biblical ideas are.

The first time I ever heard about LC was on a legalistic website torching them along w/ a host of other well known bands. I was never able to find any of their material, so when I had the opportunity to review this CD, I jumped at the chance. Glad I did for sure. LC is something totally different from anything the Christian market has put out in the decade and well worth a purchase. If you hate it you can always give it to you’re crazy friend. If you like it add another half a point for all the extras including Van Pelt’s commentary and the karaoke tracks for “The Big “M”” and “Planned Parenthood“.

YOU MAKE ME PUKE
Parties, parties, parties, parties
Drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs
Booze, booze, booze, booze
Sex, sex, sex, sex
Church, church, church, church
Church?!

(Chorus)
Oh sure! Why not?
The best of both worlds
The best of bother worlds
But thats not the way it works!
(why not??)
God says:
Youre not cold, youre not hot
You dont know who you are
But I know what youre not
You make me puke! You make me puke!
You make me puke! You make me puke!

Lust, lust, lust, lust
Greed, greed, greed, greed
Sin, sin, sin, sin
A total desire for the things of this world
A total desire for the things of this world
A total desire for the things of this world
A total desire for the things of this world
Holy, holy, holy, holy
Holy?!

(Chorus)
Oh sure! Why not?
The best of both worlds
The best of bother worlds
But thats not the way it works!
God says:
Youre not cold, youre not hot
You dont know who you are
But I know what youre not
You make me puke! You make me puke!
You make me puke! You make me puke!
Youre not cold, youre not hot
You dont know who you are
But I know what youre not
You make me puke! You make me puke!
You make me puke! You make me puke!
You make me puke! You make me puke!
You make me puke! Because youre luke!
(Revelation 3:15-16,Matthew 12:30,James 4:4)

THE BIG "M"
Its natural, its a release
Its natural, its a release
Its a release, its a release, its a release
Its a release, its a release, its a release

A release from what? Your sexual appetite!?
Forget it! Get real!! Its artificial sex!!!

(Chorus)
Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex

Some of you may one day find a mate
Wait until then and have the real thing
Sexual sin is a sin against your own body
Sexual sin is a sin against your own body
The body is not meant for sexual immorality
But for the Lord! Your bodys for the Lord!!!

Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex

Some of you wont marry on this earth
Its not for the marriage that you were given birth
Spend your time, devote yourself to God
Know the Master, nothing could be better
Think about it man! Put your body into subjection!!
Take all thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ!!!

Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex
Masturbation is artificial sex

Its a rip off!
Set your mind on other things!
Act like Jesus is with you all the time
Because He is
He sees everything you do
So, walk humbly before Him and with Him
Over sin and over temptation

Guaranteed to offend, shock, provoke thought, and make you laugh, Lust Control's re-release of We Are Not Ashamed comes with all sorts of bonuses. There are live tracks, an audio commentary by band founder Doug Van Pelt, promos, and the complete _This is a Condom Nation_ album, which had been included on a previous compilation, but had been mastered in mono.

Lust Control is as punk as punk gets – spoken/chanted/sung vocals over a bombastic guitar and drum sound that is often indistinguishable from one song to the next. The topic here is sexual sin – how it causes havoc within the world, how it divides relationships, and how that sin needs to be dealt with (and forgiven). Trademark Lust Control theme song "Grace" appears four times, at the beginning and end of each studio album.

"You Make Me Puke", a blunt statement about lukewarm Christians, is sure to please those who don't take themselves seriously, and irritate those who do. "Mad at the Girls" concerns itself with the selling of sex through media, and "The Big 'M'" condemns autoeroticism, pointing out that any substitute for sex within marriage is, in fact, sinful. The latter also appears as a bonus karaoke track, which makes me wonder which high school band is going to get expelled from their youth group after performing it.

One thing should be noted here: while the lyrics will disturb some, and cause others to chortle gleefully, there is a serious underlying message here that many churches do not touch: dealing with sexual sin and its consequences. Further, I can guarantee that fans of punk/thrash bands who would never give CCM a chance will listen to this. For that alone, Lust Control deserves attention. If you recall the late '80's and bands like Black Flag and One Bad Pig fondly, buy this disc now.
