ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Meet the future of Nu Soul. It is vocalist/songwriter/producer Patricia Maertens mix of the raw emotion of India Arie, the sophisticated grooves of Jill Scott and the experimental funk of Nelly Furtado. It's powerful, feisty and goes beyond your parent's soul records.

Inspired by her unique upbringing, Patricia ventured toward a new direction in Soul. Born in Hollywood and raised in the inner city of Inglewood, she spent her first years listening to her 1580 KDAY heroes Rufus, Rose Royce and Rick James. Weekends meant listening to conga rhythms floating out of Centinela Park. But her teenage years, spent in the sleepy beach town of Palos Verdes, left her searching for new music. She found it in the abstract words of 70's punk poetess Patti Smith, in the voice of Bessie Smith with her poignant sadness and in the timeless funk of Stevie. Spending summers in the rainforests of El Salvador (home of her mother) and a few cold winters in her father's homeland of Germany also filled her ears with international sounds adding to Patricia's growing musical palette.

Seeing life and the world from very different places has given Patricia a point of view few others share. Her original words, funky rhythms and raw soulful voice are creating quite the buzz in the Los Angeles urban underground music scene. Patricia live cannot be missed! She has played at the Temple Bar, The Mint, Genghis Cohen and other great LA Venues.

Her songs have been heard on T.V. shows "The Shield" "Knock First" and others. She began her musical training studying under the tutelage of legendary film composers and Jazz musicians at the prestigious Dick Grove School of Music (sadly, now defunct) and graduated from both the vocal and composition programs. Upon completion, Patricia was awarded a full scholarship to attend Musicians Institute.

Patricia produced her first 3 song CD with film composer Shawn Patterson
whose credits include scoring for the hit animation series "Ren & Stimpy". On her newest CD-Numero Dos- she enlisted the help of Musicians and Producers who have worked with Macy Gray, Rosy, Kim Hill, Medusa and Feline Science and Ozomatli.

However, Patricia remains her own woman. She wrote the music and lyrics to the songs as well as acting as president of her indie label Lothario Records. "This is music without compromise," says Patricia. Welcome to the future of Nu Soul.

Singer songwriter usually means a songwriter who can¹t sing. But Patricia Maertens has a strong, jazzy voice that adds power to her kinetic tunes.
Finally, a singer songwriter who can do both !

Patricia Maertens blends funky infectious beats with a melodic jazz vocal sensibility and great lyrics.... it's enough to make even the squarest soul get up and dance! Not only is she a great artist but she is a generous soul
dedicated to improving the independent community.

Extremely cutting edge...and so very appropriate!
This music, is what the industry and the public
needs. Creativity, intelligence, and uninhibited soul.
Very raw...

Patricia Maertens performs a style of music that could easily be defined by the hot new genre known as neo soul. But there is more to this musical chameleon than the basic ingredients of soul, R&B and funk. The songs Patricia writes and performs "shape shift" often, fluidly blending elements of rock and soul into something new and unique.

Rugged and ruff stuff !!
This is a very solid project I'm soo tired of sisters running down their only means of security in this Godless society Some call The Land of the free !! Don't zoom in and out of focus any longer YOUR SOUND IS TIGHT ! HEAR MINE WWW.CDBABY.com/rbrown

In the vein of "Tell me something good" ala Rufus and Chaka Khan, Patricia Maertens strikes a penetrating chord with velvety vocal stylings and old-school sensibility songwriting. The three-song CD is the debut release
on Maertens' Lothario Records. The tracks are blistering funk-ballad elegies to wrong-turn relationships and self-discovery. Maertens' range of vocal prowess comes in loud and clear throughout the collection. Godspeed PM.

Patricia's sound is refreshing to hear....soulful, funky, tight yet loose with a touch of grit and sadness. A very confident voice!
