Magnets & Ghosts is the collaboration between founding member of Collective Soul Dean Roland and producer/musician Ryan Potesta. The two Atlanta-based musicians first met when Potesta left Berklee College of Music and signed on to work with Collective Soul on their release AFTERWORDS. Down the road their bond continued to strengthen over their love for musical honesty and artistic chances and in late 2010 the two began writing sessions.
After nine months of recording. Magnets & Ghosts completed their first full-length album entitled MASS. “I was amazed on what the first few nights transpired,” says Roland. “We had something to say and the same ideas about a sound that we wanted to capture it with. Both Ryan and I definitely connected on the idea of writing a group of songs that varied in themes but together formed a complete thought. But some of the most memorable moments in our recording process came when we would remove any notion of traditional songwriting and let the sounds become lyrical. Out of those moments came songs like ‘Mass’ and ‘Half Awake.’”
Magnets & Ghosts’ eleven-song album showcases the wide array of musical influences and styles the duo posses. While talking about songs, both of the members had a lot to share. Comments Potesta, “To me, ‘Mass’ (the song) is really the beginning of ‘our sound.’ The way that it fell in to place was truly beautiful. The combined work and flow was so natural that we never questioned what we were doing while creating it. The next day, when we came in to listen to ‘Mass’ with fresh ears, we knew that we had made another strong step in our desired direction. We really wanted to take chances and embody the articles that make us fall in love with records.”
