Album Notes
In “Earth and Sky/Terra e Ceu”, each song has a story to tell. With this album, Maguinha (little magician, or sorceress) serves us a soul-nourishing brew distilled from her Portuguese, African, and Native Brazilian roots. Soft, passionate and vehement, sometimes sultry, or mischievous, or ethereal, but always musical and feeling, she weaves Brazilian tales whose protagonists are the have-nots in that cultural reality.

The guitar chords of Paulo de Carvalho and Ivo de Carvalho (not related) are exquisitely harmonious, sometimes carrying a jazzy bossa nova dissonance, other times boasting an unexpected tapestry of exotic foreign sounds. Felipe Souto’s percussion is always organic and authentically Brazilian. Pat Gullotta, Tyler Kuebler, Knut Garshol, and Maluh de Felice add great instrumental depth to this work with trombone, sax, clarinet and violin solos of melodious and lyrical vibrations.

This CD was nominated for "Best CD of Brazilian Artist Working in the USA" by the 2006 Brazilian International Press Award.

Like fine wine, Maguinha improves with time!
I am a musician/songwriter based in New York who had the honor of playing bass behind Maguinha in the 1980's, for no money, just for the pleasure of listening to her voice. OK, maybe I’m just a little prejudiced, but from where I sit and listen, this new CD is fabulous. Her voice and interpretation have grown from brilliant to divine. The artistic depth and integrity of this CD is something I now aspire to in my own work. Buy it!

I love how all the songs are distinct and beautiful, I admire the versatility of these musicians from style to style, I'm enchanted by the biting beauty of this work of art and find myself speechless to think that is my mother...UN CAPOLAVORO. UMA OBRA DE ARTE.

Especially love the English translations of the lyrics! What great idea that was. Now I totally understand the lyrics of songs I've known and loved for years (as well as some new ones). This has enriched the listening experience for me soooo much. Thank you Maguinha!!! Muitos Beijos e abracos, A.R.T.

Fascinante!
