*NEWS FLASH* The new CD "SALSAJAZZ" by the MAMBO CATS has been released for 2007 and is on sale now! 11 great salsa songs for dancing! You can buy it here or at our gigs in the San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California.
Mambo Cats directed by Carlos Araiza is a salsa big band inspired by the salsa groups from the 1940's and 50's: Machito, Tito Rodriguez, Tito Puente, etc. Featured is a full saxophone section: 2 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone. All the music is original and danceable. I studied music at San Francisco State University and with salsa greats like: Carlos Federico, Enrique Fernandez, Armando Peraza, Jose flores, John Santos, Johnny Rodriguez and Jazz master Jerry Logas on tenor sax. I've been music director for the SFSU theatre dept, Richmond performing arts center, life on the water, and red rocket theatre to name a few. I've also spent the last 25 years as a side musician for Benny Velarde, Danilo Paez, Afro Mystic, J-boogies Dubtronic Science, Ritmo y Armonía, Cheo concepcion, Los Compas, Daniel Valdez and Brotherhood, Grupo Sin Igual, Roy Brown, Los Peludos, Salsa 24, Conjunto Juventud, and more.
Our sound: Big Band Salsa with a West Coast influence. We play salsa, mambo, cha cha cha, bomba, charanga, guaguanco, rumba, son montuno, timba, songo, samba, comparsa, bossa nova interludes, latin jazz, pachanga, afro cuban and Puertorriqueno (boricua), I hope I didn't leave anything out!
