ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“Mind-boggling musicianship. Complex, provocative compositions. Darter, Manring and Kassin are all-around awesome!” –Greg Rule, Keyboard Magazine

With two gold records and multiple Grammy nominations to his credit, bass phenom Michael Manring joins fellow virtuosos Larry Kassin (flute) and Tom Darter (piano) on their second recording. Riverrun is a new 2-disc release, featuring an entire 2-set (100 min.) live concert. Exploring each of their award-winning compositional styles, the influences range from Brazilian to jazz, rock, impressionist, funk, to “Bartok-jazz”, tango, calypso, 12-tone compositions, bent ragtime and Balinese gamelan, all with their unique bass, flute, piano, “chamber music” format. They even perform their arrangement of a baroque (1716) piece, Francois Couperin’s The Mysterious Barricades. Michael Manring rocks out in a solo piece, (Helios), and if you didn’t know it was performed live, you would swear he added some additional bass overdubs later. With 16 different compositions, “the world’s most sophisticated jam-band” covers all the ground from melodic, rhythmic & evocative to atonal and free-form with a sense of humor and blazing chops.

Michael Manring has been hailed as "a master of the fretless bass without rival” by Guitar Club Magazine. Bass Player Magazine recently named him Bass Player of the Year. Pianist Tom Darter's compositions (“Darter’s quartet makes one leap for joy!” –Chicago Sun-Times) have drawn praise from Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland and Karel Husa and music critics have compared Larry Kassin's flute playing to Rahassan Roland Kirk, Hubert Laws and Paul Horn. While listeners can hear echoes of jazz, rock, classical, folk, avant-garde and world music in their performances, the net result is music that “falls between the cracks” and refuses to be compartmentalized.

This is a chance to hear an entire evening’s concert of music as it happened, that that tears down stylistic walls, with one of the most exciting, challenging and just plain smokin’ ensembles around.

So good -- it's hard to imagine.
It's hard to imagine how mere mortals, seemingly made of ordinary flesh and blood, can create such beautiful, innteresting, and imaginative music. Every cut soars, taking you to places that you could not possibly anticipate, but are really glad when you arive there.
