Formed in 2010, Mansions and Junipers make vocal and guitar-driven melodic synth-based music. Bandleader, Matthew Filler, is no stranger to music that derives from the rock dramatics and early electronic experimentation of the 1970's. The EP commences with a blissful epic, Lost Sun, Golden Moon, displaying an eloquent symmetry between a blinding early morning dawn and a crisp vivid autumn night. The title track, Paintress, sends us soaring unhinged into a heavy suburban narrative, wrought with relentless post-punk aggression, howling and hard-hitting. The EP's single, White Feather (Satin Opera), is rooted in the classic songwriting stylings of Roy Orbison or Scott Walker, but with strange nods to Pulp. An anthemic chorus rages through its core and brims to the delicate edges of the band's dynamic and unapologetic style. This is a true highlight of the EP. Navigating through In Between Your Eyes and No Shame No Borders, the music ascends and descends with an aggressive and meticulously honed schizophrenia that is sheer performance chemistry magic.
