My Fourth CD Release, California Avenue (2011/12)
After completing his third record, Naïve Lovers (a solo record that received great acclaim amongst those who reviewed it), Marc Silver & The Stonethrowers returned to The Studio Philadelphia w/ Grammy Award winner Larry Gold to make this fan funded recording, California Avenue. While keeping Marc’s signature style and lyrically mournful sensibilities, this album is a return to the Americana, country, and bluegrass roots that the band has developed a reputation for in their local region. This album was cut live in the studio without overdubs (instrumental versions of these songs are unfortunately not available, except for Orchids In The Moonlight).
Highlights on this record include the following original songs: California Avenue, a mid to up-tempo dreamscape that features Marc’s whiskey worn voice and the instrumental prowess of his band; Every Knot is an uplifting and hopeful bluegrass song with picturesque lyrics of the American countryside and modern stylized harmonies; All I’m Thinking Of Is You, is a ruckus and rowdy bluegrass song with all of your vocal harmonies and solos you’ll find in your bluegrass classics. There are also three cover songs on this record, which, for the first time give feature leads to Marc’s band mates. Mike Hlatky takes vocal leads on Sonny Thompson’s I’ll Be Your Stepping Stone, a ballad made famous by George Jones; and J.R. Robertson of The Band’s Rockin’ Chair; Orchids In The Moonlight is an instrumental tango lead by pedal steel guitar and Lap Steel player Isaac Stanford. All licenses are cleared via Harry Fox.
