"...Marc van Vugt’s Big Bizar Habit, in which string players yield to and rise against horn players and in which the more recent history of jazz has been brought together.."
"...Echoes of Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra and John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra
"Modern chamber music full of harrowing and twisting harmonies and sadly comforting songs"
"Music on the one hand filled with passion and on the other driven by the heartbeat of a hectic life."
"The broad and sometimes unusual harmonic inventions evoke a panoramic atmosphere in which intimate, poetic stories are told."
"Mostly the music sounds attractively mysterious, a little wayward but never rejecting, at times even seductive."
"Their performance resulted in nearly an infinite number of both original and catchy melodies, the duo must have a warehouse of songs hidden somewhere, containing enough material for the ages to come.
"In between the fairy-like sounds, for example, there was this funky arrangement in which the strings sounded like the horn section behind Stevie Wonder and the string players gratefully benefited from the ample space provided for improvisation."
ABOUT INEKE VAN DOORN and MARC VAN VUGT
The music of jazz singer/pianist Ineke van Doorn and composer/guitarist Marc van Vugt is best described as a mixture of lyrical, voice orientated original jazz songs and adventurous, sound orientated improvisations. Add to that the symphonic jazz sounds of Marc's large ensemble works!
Some of our credits are a Dutch Grammy, international tours and the release of 10 CD’s.
We did important collaborations with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, Het Nederlands Kamerkoor (the Dutch Chamber Choir), and created an improvised opera. As real musical chameleons we perform our original music internationally with our small jazz ensemble Van Vugt/Vandoorn (aka Vandoorn), with Big Bizar Habit: an 11-piece chamber jazz ensemble, and in solo and duo concerts.
