ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
On Room for Something New, songwriter Maria Logis sings of love and loss, chocolate and desire, in 16 songs that are by turns intimate, funny, and deeply spiritual. Her musicians create a complex musical tapestry with reeds, woodwinds, strings, piano, keyboards and percussion that is swinging, bluesy, soulful, and altogether enchanting.

This collection of songs does indeed contain more room for personal expression, a fearless and transcendent look into the soul through the mirror of music. “Sugar & Fat“, and “Better Than Chocolate” modulate the body’s appetites into affirmation with wit and jazz-inflected grace. Isolation and romantic longing inform “If I Were Not Alone.” Throughout the songs, the theme of transformation is enacted with the able assistance of Maria’s sterling ensemble of musicians led by Jon Cowherd’s gorgeous piano and vocals. His reflective tone begins “Dead To My Own Heart,” an acknowledgement of despair that becomes a call to life. Organ, flute, and Cowherd’s vocal support swing on “Sugar and Fat” and its light-yet-serious romp through appetites and menus. “Day In, Day Out” swaggers through tempo changes and tenor sax asides to declare “I could be happy”--with sly hints in lyrics and music about how that might happen. Pete Smith’s deft finger-picked guitar enlivens the country-flavored “Voracious.” In a progression of gorgeous arrangements and heart-felt singing, we hear a life in process, the difficulty of that struggle and the rewards of truth and beauty that it yields. We see the necessary room in our own lives, discovering something new as we listen.

Singer/songwriter Maria Logis turned to music after her diagnosis of cancer and found her recovery through songs that are deeply spiritual, honest, and celebratory of life and love. Logis is blazing a path through music and healing, creating an original voice as singer and composer via her songs and numerous theatrical and musical explorations of her family history, her personal struggles with cancer, sugar mania, and the rise of her life as a creative musician. In her dedication and creativity, she constantly finds Room for Something New.
