Maria McAteer is an irish/trinidadian singer songwriter based in Brighton who penned her first song aged 10 years old. She is the daughter of the late jazz saxophone/composer Al Timothy who played with Thelonius Monk and Sony Rollins and was best known for his top ten hit "Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me"
Maria's debut album "Her Night At Noon" stays true to her celtic and jazz roots with a selection of hauntingly beautiful songs written by herself and her Swedish musical partner and multi-instrumentalist Bjorn Dahlberg. The album has been described as "Melancholy Chamber Pop" and contains a rich tapestry of sound including : Piano, Saxophone, Clarinet (Bjorn Dahlberg), Cello (David Kadumukasa), Violin (Mike Simmonds), Double Bass (Jim Mortimore), French Horn (James Topp), Slide Guitar (Fred Kinbom) & Guitar (Daniel Marcus Clark). The album is mixed by producer and Mercury Music Prize nominee Steve Crittall and mastered by Grammy award winning Tom Leader (Ali Farka Toure/Courtney Pine)
Maria has been described as a female Tom Waits. Her deep husky vocals are heart-wrenchingly sincere, holding warmth and fragility as her melodic stories of love, loss, lust and longing are told and retold.
"Sade is back in town but this time she's half Irish"
