ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Enjoy classic Hawaiian melodies arranged for ‘ukulele…slack key style. The 15 songs and medleys represent the essential slack key repertoire.

"Nelson is a musician who possesses that rare combination of insight and talent necessary to successfully transcend conventional concepts of genre and culture. " John Berger, Honolulu Star Bulletin

What is slack key? Simply put, it is both a style and a repertoire. The slack key player uses open tunings and finger picking to play both melody and harmonies at the same time. But it is more than simply re-tuning your ‘ukulele. Slack key is the quintessential Hawaiian musical form. Mark Kailana Nelson learned it the old fashioned way, by listening and sitting in with wonderful Island musicians.

Mark's mastery of slack key guitar is well known through his recordings, performances, and best selling instructional books. Now he turns his attention to a little-known ukulele style he first heard at a back yard kani kapila-jam session- in Maui. Taking everything he has learned from master slack key guitarists, he has created a beautiful, relaxing CD of instrumental Hawaiian songs for the ukulele…slack key style.

Can you play slack key on the ‘ukulele? Sure, “Jus’ press.”

Tablature for all of the music may be found in "The Uke Book: Learn to Play Slack Key Style ‘Ukulele" by Mark Kailana Nelson.

Mark "Kailana" Nelson has done it again with a beautifully produced collection of island music that I would never tire of
hearing. This CD is so relaxing and is perfect for the mood I am in today. :o)
Coming to the end of another year, I can listen to this CD and count all of my blessings... and
they are many. I highly recommend this CD.
