Music from A Glimpse Beyond is an audio journey of a multi-media work commissioned by the Friends of Mt Auburn Cemetery. Violins, accordians, flutes, gadulkas, and full choirs comprise this eclectic instrumentation produced by Martin Case.
A word on the multi-media event "A Glimpse Beyond" held on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012, at Mt Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA, USA.
"This unique multicultural celebration of nature and the pastoral setting of
Mount Auburn cemetery draws its inspiration from the site-specific “Angels and
Accordions” dance presentation at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, but it
was specifically created using music, dance, poetry and other arts
expressions for the landscape and history of Mount Auburn with the cooperation
of local area arts groups, theater and dance companies, and cultural and
religious choir and dance organizations/ministries.
Beginning with a choreographed dance piece at the Bigelow Chapel, the program
unfolds as a tour into some of the most beautiful and iconic sections of Mount
Auburn as visitors follow a pair of recent Mount Auburn cemetery “arrivals”
and their guiding benevolent spirits or angels who pull back the curtain
between life and what is beyond to reveal a world of beauty, peace, songs and
instrumental music, dance, poetry and other forms of artistic expression that
magnify the inspirational natural landscape of Mount Auburn in mid-June.
Given this unifying theme, all of the performers will be dressed in white
clothing, and they will appear in both small or single performer settings and
in larger more complex set-pieces that will be included in the program based on
an artistic jury selection process. The program will end with another much
larger set-piece that will combine many of the performing groups into a joyful,
sensitive, and affirming celebration of the spirit on both sides of life and
Unifying these various performances will be the idea of looking beyond at a more
beautiful, more peaceful and joyful reality that recalls the Resurrectionist
philosophy that was part of the foundation of the rural cemetery movement, but
is actually a non-denominational view, shared by many cultures and religions,
that what is beyond is joyful not sad."
