ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
2009 JPF MUSIC AWARDS NOMINATION FOR SOLO INSTRUMENTAL SONG: TWO BUCKS, BILLY AND MIKE

Native Slovak is a collection of solo flute songs that captures the purity of both Slovakian and Native American Style Courting Flutes. As a self taught musician David Martinka draws on nature, life and his inner self to create his songs. David Martinka’s Slovakian Courting Flutes are hand crafted especially for him with the help of Tomas Kovac who is in contact with the best flute makers in Slovakia. David also crafts a version of the Native American Style Courting Flute which are used on this recording. With a long family history of music and love for the Native American Flute, David Martinka is the first bridge to the courting, healing, and peaceful side of both the Native American Style Courting Flutes and the Native Slovakian Courting Flutes in this landmark recording Native Slovak!

The Fujaras and Koncovka that were used in the recording are over tone fipple flutes. Since there is little knowledge here in the USA about them people typically try to reference them to the didgeridoo. There are two main song styles of the Fujaras, Walachian and Rural. Walachian style of playing is to use the Fujara while shepherding sheep. The shepherd would us the Fujara to calm the sheep while they nibble grass and traveled the hill sides. The Rural style of playing is more done in the evenings at parties, gatherings or to serenade love songs to the women you love.
Both of these styles of playing were used on recording Native Slovak.

David Martinka has truly found his voice in his latest CD titled "Native Slovak". To me, finding your voice means looking at everything that you've learned from others, taking what is meaningful to you, and then adding your own original flavor. That is exactly what David has done in this recording! With the unique sound of the Slovak flute, this is like no other CD that you've ever heard before. Also, the emotion that David conveys in his music sends chills down my spine at times.
In this CD, David has created subtle melodies that are intertwined with complex technique and style. In fact, the technique is so complex, it reminds me of Jazz - Native Flute Jazz you might say. It's improvisational just like Jazz music. It can be complex one moment, and simple the next. the melodies are sometimes hidden within the technique which to me isn't a bad thing because the sound, and the tone of the Slovak flute is so captivating, that it kind of creates it's own melody.
The overall effect of the album is great. It gives the listener the true, raw sound of the flute without the clutter that a lot of flute CD's have. Also, I like the way that he recorded this project. The sound is very "real" nothing electronic about it. An unedited breath here and there is a refreshing change from some of the sterile music that is created today. It keeps it sounding real - and alive.
Finally, in my opinion Native Slovak is a sound engineering masterpiece! The sound dynamics of the Slovak flute encompasses a huge pitch range, which makes it very difficult to record. Yet David has managed to engineer this CD so that the dynamic integrity of the flute was maintained, yet the flute can be heard clearly at all volume levels without overdriving the average speakers. Also, the mixing and mastering was well done. Nothing in this CD was over processed by electronics.
If your looking for something different, and original in the world of flute music, look no further than David Martinka's recordings "Native Slovak"!

Instrumental World Music CD by an Extraordinary Flutist
“Native Slovak” is a flute-infused instrumental world music album from flutist extraordinaire David Martinka. With this album, Martinka digs deep into his flute repertoire and presents the listener with classic flute styles inspired by both Native Slovakian and Native American flute courting styles. Some of the sounds Martinka creates are familiar and clear, like those one would expect from an woodwind ensemble. Others are drastically different, tribal sounding, and similar in sound to the didgeridoo. The songs on “Native Slovak” are pure, powerful, and spiritual and match the emotional feeling that each song title suggests. The album is also very well recorded, so the listener doesn’t miss a single note. “Rodný Slovák (Native Slovak)” opens the album with an intense Native American sound that gives the listener a feel for the entire album, created by Martinka’s use of the Fujara to give much of the song that didgeridoo-esque sound. “Do videnia dievča (I will See Her Soon)” is a mellow, calming, and emotional track with a more orchestral flute sound that tells the story the song title suggests. Overall, “Native Slovak” is an impressive album that shows Martinka’s talent as a flutist on a variety of different flutes. If you enjoy world-class flute playing that tells a good story, check out “Native Slovak.”
