ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A Year in Zurich: Album story
Two years ago I bought a grand piano. It all started when I found my apartment in Zurich. The first time I looked out of the wall-to-wall window opening onto the terrace, I knew that I would be writing music here. The view was breathtaking - brick chimneys, rooftop gardens, the snow- covered Alps in the background and as far as my eyes could reach; green. I could breathe, I felt inspired again. I was back in Zurich, my hometown, after spending 15-year in LA, ripe with musical experience, brimming with ideas and a burning desire to play my piano. I felt very emotional, knowing that this was the beginning of a new musical chapter in my life.
The first part of my artistic journey had started as a child. I had grown up in a musical family where my dad used to wake us up every morning at 7 o'clock playing classical and his own music on the piano. His improvisations were highly spirited, although classical, had an exotic blend of some other influence... a slight breeze of blues, a hint of jazz. I realize now that these early morning awakenings sowed the seeds for my own musical compositions. I used to play piano as a child but then I was not very good at it. I had no discipline and didn't want to learn to read piano music. I only knew a few tunes. Whenever there was time to escape from our busy house, which also served as a boarding school, I would lock myself in a big room with a beautiful crystal chandelier where two grand pianos were facing each other and go wild. A few years later, a new instrument drew my attention. And so it was the cello that accompanied me through all my classical education. After completing my masters, I was a free man with a new dilemma. Cello was not really my calling, at least not in the classical field so I electrified it and that idea opened for me door to Hollywood movies. ... the remaining story is on Martin Tillman website.

MARTIN TILLMAN

A Year In Zurich

(c) (p) 2004 Tillmanji Records

13 tks/56 min

A pinching sorrow caused by meets and losses

Is like a wind that’s tearing

The last shriveled-up leaf off the tree...

An exposed sincerity inheres in this music, when nothing can dissemble a very strong emotional experiences. There is no need whatsoever to hide them as far as all the life long -- from the moment of birth up to this very moment -- consists of them, and this very moment, inestimable and unique shall never come again. This is the music created by a man who’s not afraid to uncover his inward life since love and romanticism inhere in him.

Martin Tillman’s music is very visual. It depicts February when an ice-field is sparkling brightly in sunset rays. And a silent dark forest is visible in the distance. And one would like to go on walking along this endless plain in the winter silence and cold which is chilling to the marrow. Walking where to? Maybe, to a lonesome airport building from where one could fly away to a warm sea and a bright blue summer sky which are attracting you with warmth and insouciance. Or maybe there is no need to leave this place for anywhere because this winter desert, an obscure forest darkening at the skyline seem to be genuine events which will never appear again. And the warmth which you keep inside will not let the surrounding chilling cold spread around…

The album “A Year In Zurich” narrates of Martin Tillman’s period of life in Switzerland. This music is very European in spirit. It is suffused with fragrances of Alpine meadows and smart views of distant mountains which serve as a background for neat houses with brick chimneys and rooftop verdant gardens. It is a place for solitude and deepening in your own reality which turns out to be immense, boundless and not entirely comprehensible.

Martin Tillman proved himself not only a brilliant performer but a talented composer as well. His piano expresses the slightest nuances of feelings. This is a quite new stage in the creative work of Martin Tillman who concerns himself with the piano music. One takes a true delight in sounding of the album. And it is not by chance since the album “A Year In Zurich” as well as all Martin Tillman’s earlier works were produced by a brilliant master Tom Vedvik. Maybe, even so the album is being heard from the first chords to final ones without taking a breath.

As compared with Martin Tillman’s previous projects “A Year In Zurich” has more nuances and semi-tones. This album is more delicate and intellectual than other works of the composer. And infinite feelings and emotions inhere in it. You are just deep in them and feel everything that troubled the composer the year he had settled down in Zurich.

While hearing this album you feel the things which remain imperishable. These are love and tenderness expressed in full in Martin Tillman’s music.

The music only is destined to repress the sorrow,

The silence only will remedy the madness

They two are right along together:

The silence and the music.

They are right along with you…

the beauty of his work
After listening “A year in Zurich”, I’d liked to write a book: how today’s “ Classic recordings ” could sound.
The variation of composition, the fine finger movements over the Key’s, the art of playing the Cello and all this small moments of bliss…but it are difficult to find words for the beauty of his work! And it would be just a trop about this “ Magic” witch Martins Tillman’s CD enclose. Produced and performed that you think it exist nothing easier to write music for Piano & Cello…

Beautifully written compositions delivered with true style and eloquence.
I purchased this cd a few weeks ago and it now lives in my ipod. Whether driving on the road or at home it always makes for great company. It's delivered with much passion, grace and eloquence. These compositions truly sing to the heart and stir the soul. One of Tillman's gifts is that he allows the music to quietly speak so loud. Everyone should own a copy of A Year In Zurich.

It lets me touch the abstract spheres of creation
This is music that the world needs. Isnt the musicians duty to transport pure emotions to the listener? Thats what Martin achieved big time with his music on this album. During listening, it lets me touch the abstract spheres of creation. It brings me to the places where love, sensuality and the the spirit of art have their roots. Thanks for taking me with you dear friend.

An absolute masterpiece.... I love it!
This CD is a masterpiece for itself. It contains a romantic, passionate, inspiring and melancholic side of music which not only makes it very unique, but on top it's composed by a person I admire very much as person as well as artiste and this CD reflects this unique personality via his music. It gets many nice memories up when I listen to it and therefore I simply love it!

An absolutely beautiful album
Martin and I have collaborated on several award winning albums together ("The Poet", "Afterglow" and "Solace") and his "A Year In Zurich" is one of the very best I have heard this year.By the way,Martin not only composes music of great beauty but also plays both the cello and piano with equal artistry. What a talent, and what an exceptionally beautiful album.Bravo Martin!

His newest CD doesn't disappoint!
I've been waiting for a new CD from Martin Tillman and couldn't get it anywhere but here, on CDBaby! This CD is a little bit of a change, since the others are mostly cello, but the performance and writing skills are as superb as ever. I could (and do) listen to this forever.

Great Martin Tillman CD
I am so happy I persevered and ordered this CD from CD Baby. Couldn't find it at my local music store. The music is fantastic and is a crossover of many genres I listen to; new age, classical, jazz. I was introduced to Martin Tillman on the heartsofspace website and couldn't be happier with all of the cuts, even those I hadn't heard before. Thanks so much Martin for sharing your beautiful music with all of us.
