Marvelous Mack - Tailor Made

The Milwaukee soul/blues community is held together in great part these days by musical talent, hard work, and charisma of singer, keyboardist, and bandleader Marvelous Mack.

Mack is a jack-of-all trades, a man known around the city as much for his kind heart as for his “playa” attitude, business acumen, and ability to get a party started as soon as he steps out of his van.

If you live outside of what seems to be Mack’s 24/7 party realm, this ten-song disc is for you. It offers a small taste of Mack’s wild world. The big man has again waxed a fine, funky, yet predominately laid-back, soul/blues party on Tailor Made.

The 51 year old former Chicagoan (Mack grew up on blues-doused Maxwell Street) recorded the release at Milwaukee’s Studio Z. It’s his third album. Although a bit more mellow than previous efforts, Tailor Made still manages to kick up a racket on the Tyronne Davis-influenced Cheatin’ On Me and Stepper’s Anthem. Mack, however, spends much of the disc offering his philosophies of love and romance on seductive numbers like Groove Your Body and the epic Story of Love.

The Marvelous One’s respect for the greats of the soul/blues genre, his idols such as Bobby Bland and Jonnie Taylor, is evident on Tailor Made, which brings with it decidedly slick production values often associated with Malaco Records in the 1990’s. The disc however, simply reveals Mack to be what he is live on stage- a likeable, versatile, street-wise, soul/blues crooner who can bring any backyard BBQ or steppers’ soiree to life before the sun’s even down. And when the sun goes down, look out, because that’s when Mack really goes to work, letting his smooth, romantic soul loose.

The year 2013 comes with a promise from Mack on a forth album, one he said in his usual firm manner, will be “strictly blues.” With that in mind, Milwaukeeans better get ready for some more soul-drenched record-release parties this summer. – written by Steve Sharp
