ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“Mason Williams & The Santa Fe Recital”

Mason formed The Santa Fe Recital: A band consisting of Steve Keith (5-string banjo), Hugh Hazelrigg (cello), Doug Cottler (bass), George Bouhey (drums). A regional country, folk and bluegrass band, they played clubs, bars and concerts throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. The band recorded this album - originally called “Fresh Fish” (Flying Fish Records) - an early prototype of the bluegrass-for-symphony project that would occupy Williams in the years to follow.

Musicians on the recording:
Mason Williams - Acoustic Guitar
Rick Cunha - Acoustic Guitar/Electric Guitar
Steve Keith - Fiddle/Banjo
William Cunningham - Fiddle/Dobro
James Sitterly - Violin
Hugh Hazelrigg - Violincelli
Steven LeFever - Bass
Georges Bouhey - Drums/Percussion
Macy Weems - Lyric Baritone

*Cold, Cold Heart" was on the 15ips safety master. It was not included on the original 1978, Flying Fish release. It was not a finished mix, but I decided to include it on this CD as a bonus track. The instrumental verse has all of the tracks up. They would have been sorted out in a final mix. I kind of like the chaotic rubberiness it has -- sounds like a group at a dance improvising its way through the changes. We used to call these pantonic musical lines and ideas crawling through the changes in a sort of free-form harmonic ambiguity, “Worm City.”
