ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Ocean is the GRAMMY® nominated, award winning album by four time Grammy nominee Michael Brant DeMaria. Ocean held the #1 spot on the New Age/World/Ambient Chart for 3 months and then went on to win two Zone Music Awards:

BEST AMBIENT ALBUM OF 2009

BEST RELAXATION/MEDITATION ALBUM OF 2009

This CD is based on 25 years of research into the world of sound healing. Ocean is his second CD in the Healing Sound Series and takes the listener deep into the ambient sounds of the Ocean. He has been the featured musician for renowned poets Robert Bly and David Whyte and played and studied with Grammy winner David Darling in addition to many other Grammy and Grammy nominated recording artists.

Michael writes in the liner notes: "The Ocean brought all life to this planet. The Ocean is the great mother of the watersheds of earth - without which we could not live. The oceans of the world touch every continent, every people, every culture on our planet. They accept us all regardless of color, custom, language or belief. Much like the ever flowing rivers of the world, we take on different names and forms until we are ready to go home - to the place we began - our One Source - the Ocean of Being where life can always begin again with hope, love and life. These are my tone prayers and sound poems offered up in honor and respect of the wisdom of the ocean waters. This music served to heal me and revive me from the devestating hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005 where we lost our home - so I dedicate them to all who are in need of peace, tranquility and healing in times of struggle, transition and transformation. Breathe, release, listen and let go."

From Inside the CD:

The Ocean brought all life to this planet. The Ocean is the great mother of the watersheds of earth - without which we could not live. The oceans of the world touch every continent, every people, every culture on our planet. They accept us all regardless of color, custom, language or belief.

"Driven by the need to heal from the devastation of the horrific hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005, pianist/keyboardist and Native flute player Michael Brant DeMaria journeyed deep into the essence of Planet Earth's lifeblood, i.e. the oceans which surround us. The result is Ocean, a mesmerizing, fluid mixture of atmospheric ambient soundscapes and subtle Native flute/fusion influences and textures. As he did on the critically acclaimed Siyotanka, DeMaria brings discernible cinematic overtones to his layered keyboards and echoed piano, sometimes accompanied by haunting and plaintive flute melodies. By turns, meditative, serene, subtly dark, and softly mysterious, Ocean is an immersive album…Dive deep into this Ocean and discover your personal connection to our world's watery soul."
- Bill Binkelman, Zone Music Reporter

"The aspect of Michael's music that impressed me most on his previous release, Siyotanka was his ability to touch the listener with the power needed to heal them... and this new release shows that talent at an even deeper level.. Well crafted and full of spirit, DeMaria's music touches your mind through passages that (at times) feel like your brain is being massaged.. This kind of music deserves your undivided attention..you should make sure you set aside the full hour for an uninterrupted listen - preferably with headphones on. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
- Improvijazzation

"Ocean"…plunges us into a sea of tranquility, repose, and well being - the sounds ply our body with quiet, hypnotic, and ethereal themes, full of mystery…creating a landscape of exceptional beauty. It is a pleasure to hear this work that seeks the softening of our very being and allows us to venture into magical worlds away from our stressful day to day lives.”
- A Ultima Fronteira

“There is an epic scale to this album, almost symphonic on some tracks and highly orchestrated - and all performed by one man!... Drift in your floatation tank to this and you will be truly in space...Yes, Ocean is very New Age, but I think it grows out of that and becomes an album which should appeal to those who listen to ambient and electronica. I could even imagine some imaginative DJs playing this in the chill out rooms to bring down ravers at the end of the night. Ocean is a worthy sequal to Siyotanka, and one that could be a huge hit. Highly recommended.”

Writings by Serge Kozlovsky
In rolling waves of Ocean
Are hidden life and death.
They come together in this world

The album “Ocean” by Michael Brant DeMaria is not just music for healing. These are melodies for transformation and achievement of higher consciousness states because they contain such incredible depths.

The music of Michael Brant DeMaria carries tranquility and the infinity of an ocean. It is filled with low bass sounds and the mysterious singing of native flutes. Tunes of “Ocean” have a bewitching charm. They relax your mind from the first seconds and dip you into the totally unknown and magnetic underwater world.

Michael Brant DeMaria expressed in his ambient music the awesome power of the Ocean that has the power to give life one moment, and just as easily take it away.

The heartfelt and poignant music of the album “Ocean” revives long ago forgotten memories and helps you to return to the pleasant moments of your life.

As you listen to “Ocean” you realize that the time of global changes are closer and closer.

From MainlyPiano
"Ocean" is the follow-up to Michael Brant Demaria’s 2008 release, "Siyotanka," and is a stunning new addition to his Healing Sound series. A psychologist and soul guide “by day” and a musician and artist “by night,” Demaria created this music to help himself heal after a series of three hurricanes in 2004-05 destroyed his coastal Florida home and caused him to reevaluate his life. The music on "Ocean" is much more ambient than the music on Siyotanka, and Demaria composed and performed all of the music himself using piano, synth, percussion, indigenous flutes, and his voice. In the liner notes, Demaria says, “This CD is based on 25 years of research into the world of sound healing. Ideal for massage, yoga, meditation, or anytime the world has become too much and you need to flow again.” Used as background music, it provides a very calming atmosphere, but with full attention the soothing sounds will take you to a place of beauty and calm.

"Ocean" begins with the mysterious “Surfacing,” which uses water sounds and very deep musical tones that suggest dark vastness and calm. “Open Water” introduces string washes, flutes, and ambient sounds that express an openness and light rather than floating in darkness. As its title implies, “Moonlit Ocean” is about being surrounded by shimmering beauty and dancing light, and being transported by the experience. I really love this one! “Diving Deep” returns to the dark mysteries below the surface of the ocean, with its flickers of light and mysterious shapes and creatures. “Another World” goes deeper with this feeling enhanced by the sound of an “ultra low” redwood flute that sounds much like a didjeridoo. The effect created is that of weightless floating without fear or concern. “Transformation” begins with water sounds and a backdrop of ambient musical sound. Again, the feeling is of peaceful floating. Drums are heard occasionally, continuing to build as the flutes sing of coming change, and then trailing off as the transformation becomes complete. “Horizon” is the final track on this exquisite journey, and the sound of harps and warm, gentle washes of musical color indicate a new beginning and a fresh start.

"Ocean" is intensely personal yet universal in its themes and scope. Michael Demaria’s words in the liner notes help to explain the journey, yet leave much to the listener’s imagination and personal interpretation of the music. It’s a remarkable musical experience!

Oceanic Living
Michael Brant DeMaria, PH.D. is a clinical psychologist, composing musician, poet, author, and dedicator of his Healing Sound Series to all hurricane survivors past, present, and future. In his psychotherapy practice, Michael created ONTOS ( Greek for Being ) to help people live more meaningful and effective lives, and his ambient music is designed as therapy to help assist survivors by easing their return to coastal living again. While writing this review I learned Michael was among those who lost their family home during the 2004 – 2005 hurricane seasons, so his therapy support does arrive from a first person perspective. The River began the Healing Sound Series, with Ocean second in the series based on over 25 years of personal and professional research in the fundamental principals of sonic healing techniques, helping survivors relax and return to a more peaceful existence through ambient sound techniques. His third release Siyotanka won the Native American Music Award in the Native Heart category, being placed on the Grammy ballot for Best Native American Music Album, while retaining the # 1 position on ZMR charts in February 2009. His music, art, and poetry acquired U.S. recognition while gaining international acceptance in Australia, Europe, and Russia, touching the lives of many persons.
The Ocean album helps reclaim the natural bond we share with our greater oceanic waters, rejuvenating our vital relationship by interweaving calming ambient therapy, in a bright reflection that restores a more positive link with our mysterious, life sustaining hydrosphere. Ocean responds by calming ambiance and some unique blending of World & Contemporary instrumentals of Native American flute, African Djembe, Middle Eastern Doumbek, Indian Sruti box and Aerophones. More traditional keyboards, piano, and percussion also form the connection into 11 songs reflecting titles in the theme of our primarily blue planet. Open Water begins with a compelling quiet stillness, approaching more subtle moments before synthesizer starts the slow emergence into woodwinds equally calming approach, nicely illustrating the vast waters that comprise over seventy percent of the Earth. Light ambient notes appear in Moonlit Sea to instill a moment of solitude before woodwind flute begins a comforting reflection by softer drawn out notes, generating a gentle shimmering effect like small surface ripples moving outward on top of peaceful waters. Transformation enters a flute prelude with graceful motions that show like soft sound waves quietly lapping against the shoreline and ambient notes soon appear like airy clouds that drift alongside bass percussion signaling an ancient rhythm. The distant chants put forth a revitalizing atmosphere while deeper tones give an impression of deep universal depths, before bringing the lighter theme back to the surface. The commingling of deep and shallower notes are also heard in Remember, conveying soft chants and woodwinds while interacting with a deeper mesmerizing background, defining the chosen ambient theme for the album as a pleasent and relaxing one. In Search Of Home divulges into intrigue I felt was natural, enchanting, and just right for a final reflection about the Oceans since we enjoy, yet depend on them so much, and our hydrosphere pretty much remains a universal unsolved mystery that completely surrounds us.

Ocean
Listening to \"Ocean\" is a deeply beautiful experience. This is my absolute favorite cd for meditative movement and personal recharge/renewal time. Lovely & well-crafted with a flow that seems to naturally evolve, \"Ocean\" is great for massage, acupuncture, Zero Balancing, or any therapeutic modality that enhances expanded states of consciousness/Being. This wonderfully rich ambient soundscape helps to both float and ground you; perfect for relaxation, renewal of the indigenous mind and opening inner channels to Soul-Source.
