by Melody Den

If the Stones, the Faces and Mott the Hoople were alt-country before alt-country was cool, then so is Melody Den. The second album from the St. Louis rockers rolls out with horns, grit, soul and blues. Buckle up and play loud.

Album Notes
Marc Chechik has been leading Melody Den for over a decade, trotting out his steel-eyed, soulful brand of Americana every once in a blue moon. The quartet is set to release Storylines, its sophomore record (and first since 2007) this weekend, and it was made with help from a handful of local friends. John Horton, CoCo Soul, Kip Loui and others contributed to the LP, and these embellishments – the peppy horns on opener “More Here than Meets the Eye,” the strong and well-placed harmony vocals on the title track and throughout – give a bit more muscle to the songs. But it's Chechik’s voice and vision that give Storylines its grounding and what makes these songs stories worth retelling. — Christian Schaeffer (Riverfront Times)

Kickin' tunes from the heartland
Just listened to this CD for the 3rd time & it kills. "More Than Meets the Eye" & "Lovely Lie" are ballsy, "'Bitch'-like Sticky Fingeresque" 3-minute romps that would give Bobby Keyes a smile. Songwriter Marc Chechik & Melody Den give a polished, solid trip thru Alt roots paying homage to obvious Stone's influences & providing cuts like "Life He Had" also gives the listener a tasty modern-day Gram Parsons ring. The close of "Amarillo" is a classic at Melody Den shows around the midwest & was an added bonus for the CD. A great, tight collection of Americana. I may have to sit back with Uncle Herb & give it a 4th play!
