ME THREE is a Calgary AB band formed in August 2009. Their music is a blend of punk and metal, filled with heavy beats and guitar riffs but balanced with pop melodies and harmonies, creating a diverse set of songs and sounds that make their music appealing to a wide audience. Uniquely, this power-trio have all three members contributing vocals which range from
ear-pleasing melodies, to ferocious screams and growls that add interesting layers to every song.
Darcy and Nick Johnson are brothers (which becomes very obvious from their humorous, on-stage rapport) but have only been playing together for a short while. While Nick has only recently started playing the bass guitar, Darcy has been a guitarist since his high school days, when he created the band Studded For Pleasure, which he fronted for six years. Bayan has been drumming for six years and was also a member of Studded For Pleasure for two years.
ME THREE may be a heavy band, but they promote a positive, do-it-yourself attitude that they exhibit with their ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality. Their music’s humanist themes suggest that the only way to make positive change in your life is to take control and do the work. “If we’re to make sense of this chaotic world, we need to get off our collective behind and work together to promote sanity instead of paranoia and hate,” says Nick. But these serious themes are also mixed in with a deeply ingrained love for fun and performing and the band goes to great lengths not to take themselves too seriously, as anyone who has experienced one of their live shows can say.
Though there are only three members of ME THREE, these performers have a high-energy stage presence, creating some very engaging live shows filled with intense sounds, laughs and enthusiasm. Live performances are special as each ME THREE show has a unique theme, ranging from Boy Band, to Police Squad to the Atomic Santa Christmas Show in High River, AB. All of the members dress in costume and incorporate covers into their original songs, from TV theme tunes to the Backstreet Boys to Michael Jackson. Adding their unique sound to recognizable covers provides enjoyment for everyone in the audience, even those unfamiliar with the band’s music. All of this is designed to make each show unique and memorable; an unforgettable good time that, with a little word of mouth, will get more people attending musical shows across the province and filling up its many, beautiful venues.
