Mystery Bay

by Mich Gerber

Mich Gerber had developed quite an unusual style for a double bassist. His debut album, Mystery Bay, was filled with melancholic, middle eastern sounding melodies interspersed with smooth techno beats as well.

Album Notes
«Originally, Mich was interested in Fine Arts and went to the College of Art to learn Theatre Painting. Attracted by the visual effect of the double bass he decided to buy it just to have one of these wooden sculptures at home, and began playing around on it a little bit. He soon found out that he liked the vibe of the double bass and his fascination for this instrument grew. He played it more and more until he decided to go to a conservatory after he finished his education as a theatre painter. After his graduation from the conservatory in 1983 he played a few years in the classical Symphony Orchestra of Bern. He then left to play in various bands, experiencing all manner of styles from improvised music to Jazz, free Jazz, from Rock onto hardcore, and then in an Avant-garde classical orchestra with hardcore tendencies. Then at that point he made up his mind to pursue a solo career. Mich had developed quite an unusual style for a double bassist. His debut album, Mystery Bay, was filled with melancholic, middle eastern sounding melodies interspersed with smooth techno beats as well. His second album and his most recent Amor Fati melts tradition into modernity by melding the sounds of the double bass with DJ 'scratching'.» (Global Bass)

It makes perfect sense that Mich Gerber’s first love was painting. His double bass-heavy world fusion compositions are picturesque and potent. Each brooding piece seems to suggest a narrative, a sense of place, a sweeping vision or emotional journey. Drawing from Middle Eastern traditions, ambient electronica, orchestral chamber works and exploratory jazz, this masterful upright bassist weaves together an expressive tapestry with his varied techniques, from string bowing to percussive slaps. “Mystery Bay” paints the picture of a dark, ominous cloud with silver lining aplenty.

This album is a milestone in music - amazing, never heared before, great to be carried away!

I remember flying on a carpet through the desert with this music in the air - there is nothing like this...

One of my best loved CDs
My first Mich Gerber cd was a copy of "Tales of the wind". I receved it from a friend four years ago and it still is one of my best loved CD's ever! Mich Gerbers music is outstanding and timless and therefore stays a companion trough the years. If you ever have the occasion to see and hear Mich play live then don't miss it!

Wonderful songs...! I have no words to describe, but it's music for the soul. Enjoy it!

I love all the music from Mich Gerber!

Music for the Soul
Mich Gerber's music seems to flow from his soul. He uses his instrument in a unique, inventive way to speak a hundred different languages, touching the heart and soul of whoever is fortunate to be listening. His music is uplifting, I have rarely heard anything like it. It moves and lifts the spirit. I specially enjoy the mellow pieces, very much also the joint pieces with Jael that I have found on Youtube. I hope there will be many more CD's and concerts to come. - Ragini

I am so taken with this cd. It's funny but when I first started to preview it, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it after all, BUT as I continued to listen, I was mesmerized by the journey. This is truly hypnotic and beautiful, a full journey within a combination of middle eastern and african sounds. As I write this, it's still playing, and this is the 3rd time in a row. I LOVE it. Let your mind go, melt into the rhythm, and you, too, will be on a marvelous journey. Thanks, Mich :D
