I wrote the Africa Rise Up song almost ten years ago for the Ghana black stars in 2004 and re-wrote it for the World Cup when it was being hosted on African soil for the first time in South Africa in 2010 but I never found any professional musician to sing the song on both occasions. Although I am a singer myself, I thought my voice wasn't good enough.
I came to Germany two years go to do my masters. In the process, I met a met a music producer, Johannes Ottoreischmann who invited me to his studio. While there, I told him I had written a song many years back and would be grateful if he can record me. He gladly did. Although he liked my voice and suggested we sell it, I still didn't think my voice was good enough.
Then in the summer of 2012, I was selected for the Hesselbein Global Leadership Academy in the United States. While there, I met another student musician from Mexico, Miguel Ramirez, who loved the song and decided to do another funky version of it. While I returned back to Germany to continue my masters, Miguel returned back to Mexico to record my song. Within a few months, he sent me his version which I truly liked.
As my 30th Birthday is approaching (21/03), I decided to launch the Africa Rise Up Project and sell the song on digital media to raise funds to support diverse NGOs in Africa with their projects. I used to run an NGO myself while I was in Ghana so I know the pain and frustration NGOs and youth leaders go through when they have great development ideas and no financial backing. On my birthday (coming up in a few days), I want to direct all my friends and love ones from around the world to the cdbaby website to buy the song as a gift not to me, but to the less privileged.
My hope is that many African artistes will get involved by recording original songs, that not only inspires the current generation of Africans to rise and shine, but songs that enhances socio-economic development and promotes a good image of the continent. They will pass over their songs to me and then I will sell them via digital media.
