The songs have a real down home, danceable quality to them.
Mike’s rural tinged lyrics, bouncy melodies and solid finger picked
guitar certainly reflects his deep Piedmont blues influences and
the love he has for the country blues. Along with some nice slide
playing and tasty guitar lines the addition of sweet vocal harmonies
round out the songs quite nicely.
I first me Mike when I was teaching acoustic blues guitar out
of the basement of a music store. His quiet, unassuming nature
belied the energy in which he went about studying the lessons
I gave him. Each week he’d come back with the music mastered
and was hungry for more. However, Mike also had a burning desire
to learn about the people who first made this rural blues music and
the rich history that fertilized its roots.
That desire - combined with his willingness to contribute some
much needed gas money - convinced me to take him along on one
of my trips to the Mississippi Delta where we both learned the finer
points of blues playing at the feet of some of the best musicians
still living at the time.
Mike’s taken those lessons and is now carrying on the tradition of
performing and passing the music on to his own students who
are very lucky to have someone like him as a teacher.
I”m real proud of him.” Little Toby Walker
