Flatpicking at it's best ----
This is stellar guitar playing. This cd has musicianship, creativity, just a whole lot of good music. I like
keeping reviews simple.....this one is well worth the dough. Spend it. I'm a real picky listener. I heard this guy live at a show years ago and bought the cd at that time - once they go, they go. Good listening music, good driving music. If you live in So. California and have an opportunity to go hear him, do it. Good entertainment, he plays with the best bluegrass musicians in So. CA. .

Excellent solo debut for the talented Mike Nadolson
Mike Nadolson’s 1998 release of “Quicksand” from his Tricopolis Records features some of California’s hottest bluegrass musicians --Mike Nadolson (guitar, lead vocals), Dennis Caplinger (banjo, fiddle, bass, harmony vocals), David Dias (dobro), John Moore (mandolin, 2 tracks), Bob Applebaum (mandolin, 4 tracks), Kenny Blackwell (mandolin, 6 tracks), Walden Dahl (vocals, 7 tracks), David Richardson (vocals, 3 tracks), and Dean Knight (tenor vocals, 3 tracks). The musicians are (or were) associated with such well-known bluegrass groups as Bluegrass Etc., Laurel Canyon Ramblers, Silverado, and the Walden Dahl Band.

Mike Nadolson has a smooth baritone vocal delivery, and the band chooses a nice mix of standards like “Nine Pound Hammer” and “Cabin of Love” and “Red Haired Boy,” supplemented with more contemporary pieces like Wayne Taylor’s “Smokey Mountain Home,” and Chris Jones’ “Uphill Climb” and Marlow Tackett’s “I Know My Way to You by Heart.” Nadolson is comfortable with the up-tempo numbers, but he seems most at ease with a country song like Ernest Tubb’s “You Won’t Ever Forget Me” or Lester Flatt’s “Someone Took My Place With You.” David Dias’ instrumental title cut, “Quicksand,” is a barn burner. Their song selection could have strived for a few more originals because one can’t help but compare renditions of songs like “Muddy Waters” or “In the Gravel Yard” to others recorded by the likes of the Seldom Scene or Blue Highway.

Originally from Ohio, Mike Nadolson has won awards for his guitar playing and singing. He took first at the Four Corners Regional Flatpicking Championships in Wickenburg, Az. in 1980 and 1981. He has played and recorded with many bands including Alive and Pickin’, Shadow Mountain (with Ron Block and Dennis Caplinger), Damascus Road, Circuit Riders, Bluegrass Etc. and Byron Berline and Friends. “Quicksand” is an excellent solo debut for the talented Mike Nadolson. Hearing this project reminds me of some of the fine California bands I used to hear at festivals in Norco, Blythe, Havasu and Victorville. (Joe Ross)
