Album Notes
Mike Sweetland is a Bay Area based composer and multi-instrumentalist. He began playing bass guitar in the late 70\'s and in the early 80\'s studied with Joe Satriani. Joe introduced him to the modal jazz and scale theory of his former teacher, jazz great Lennie Tristano. While playing regular local gigs at parties,Mike began teaching bass lessons from the mid 80\'s onward. In the 90\'s he formed the southern rock/funk band Bumptious and began performing on upright bass in addition to bass guitar. Conventional six string guitar and percussion also began to figure in his recording/ gigging itinerary.
Bumptious broke up after years on the Bay Area night club and party circuit in the late 90\'s.
During this time, Mike began composing some of the material heard on this, his debut album. While certainly jazz oriented, several tracks display his funk-rock roots as a player and his avant garde-sound track music roots as a listener. It is all acoustic and all instrumental.
Mike has performed live and in the studio on electric and acoustic bass professionally with bands whose styles range from folk to hip hop to blue grass (once gigging with Peter Rowan)to rockabilly. He has played bass guitar with George Cinton\'s P.Funk All Star alumni LZ Love and TJ Phoenix (LZ Phoenix) on arena and festival stages one night while playing jazz in intimate clubs on upright bass the next night.Currently and for almost a decade now he has played jazz gigs in trio to quintet settings around the Bay.
