Album Notes
In 1999 and 2006, I had the privilege of accompanying our church group to the Holy Land. I had no idea what a profound impact these trips would have on my understanding of the stage upon which the ongoing story of redemption began. Between the two pilgrimages, I had the opportunity to sing on the Sea of Galilee (in a boat), on the Mount of Olives looking out on Jerusalem, in the Upper Room, on the Tel of Megiddo overlooking the Valley of Armageddon, and several other holy sites. After experiencing the Holy Land for myself, I wanted to record a CD that, in chronological order, contained songs that told some of my favorite Bible stories of the Holy Land and that gave compelling spiritual challenges with thought provoking lyrics and maybe even a little fun and good humor.

This unique CD recording has been years in the making, but the story which it tells started before time began. In tackling a book that spans nearly 750,000 words, one can hardly hope to encompass the grand scale on which this divinely inspired, 6,000 year old drama takes place. However, with much prayer and preparation, I hope that with 12 songs and 45 minutes I am able to take you on your own musical pilgrimage through the pages of Holy Scripture. May the Holy Spirit enable you to capture some of the spiritual themes, unparalleled continuity, and enduring stories that He breathed into the hearts of the writers.

With God's help, I believe that I have accomplished the dream that He set into motion years ago. I pray that every time you play this project you are not only transported cover to cover, but that you have an encounter with its Author.

"Through The Pages" sets up the project with an explanation of why and wherefore I'm doing it. One of the key lines in this original song penned by my Dad, James Pike, is, "it's the ongoing story of redemption's history." The Bible tells why redemption was needed, how God brought it about, and what that means for us. But from the last verse until now, redemption's history is still being written in me and you.
Romans 8:1-39; Colossians 3:1-10; John 14:9-21

And then, "In The Cool of the Day" tells of the beginning of God's redemptive plan. Fittingly, the song begins in Genesis, where the Garden of Eden illustrates God's intended relationship with man, the fall of man, and what God intended to do about it.
Genesis 3:1-24; 1 Peter 1:18-21; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22

"I Am" follows and highlights some of the most recognized names in Scripture. Abraham, Moses, David, and even a glimpse into the New Testament with Paul. Stepping over into our time, with you and me, it speaks of who they were, and who we are, because of who He is. "I'm Your servant, and You're the Great I AM."
Exodus 3:1-22; Genesis 15:1-21; Psalms 116:1-19; 2 Timothy 4:1-8

"Gonna Take It And Leave It" … you'll rarely hear a sermon about prayer that doesn't reference Daniel and his pattern of prayer that warranted him power in prayer. With a one man quartet/big band swing approach, here's Daniel's story, and our model of a Godly prayer life.
Daniel 6:1-28; 1 Peter 1:3-9

In "Wake Up Call", with four part harmony and one piano, Jonah takes the stage. Here's a new spin on a well known "whale of a tale" about obedience and the consequences of disobedience. In this story, as through all of Scripture, you can clearly see God's hand accomplishing God's will.
Jonah 1:1 - 3:10; 1 John 2:3-5

The Old Testament gives way to the New with the search of the wise men in the first line of "Hope Has Hands". This song paints more clearly the sight they saw in the manger than any sermon or song I've ever heard. It speaks of what Christ was, what He came to do, and Who He is still today.
Philippians 2:6-11; Isaiah 53; John 1:14; Isaiah 9:6-7; 2 Corinthians 4:6

"The Ragged Edge" speaks to the saved, the lost, and the prodigal. This is the story of one desperate woman, crazy enough to believe that if she were to but touch the ragged hem of Jesus' garment, she would be made whole. Her story shows us that for the life or situation that is worn, torn, frazzled, frayed, and in need of patching, there is hope "on the ragged edge." In Christ's vocabulary, there are no 'hopeless causes' and no 'helpless situations.'
Matthew 11:28-30; Matthew 5:1-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; Luke 14:16-23;

"Pigs Flew" -- What Gospel album would be complete without a song of this title and this message? Pulling from a lesser-known story in the Bible, this song paints a tongue in cheek, yet strong and memorable message about Christ's ability to do the impossible in our lives. Depression, oppression, worry, and fear find a watery grave at Christ's command.
Luke 8:26-39; Mark 9:14-29; Matthew 17:19-20

"Teach Me To Love Like That" -- In the Greek, as in this song, Love has many meanings. Each verse of this song has a different lesson, a different aspect of what Jesus was, and what we as Christians are commanded to be and do. In the first verse, we see the acceptance, understanding, and compassion for fallen humanity that Jesus gave the woman caught in the act. Then the second verse shows the kindness, patience, and servanthood that Jesus gave Judas from the beginning, knowing that Judas would betray him. Finally, the song tells of the utter forgiveness, transcendent goodness, and persistent love our Lord displayed while wrongfully on trial, being scoffed and laughed at, and finally crucified.
Luke 23:32-35; Matthew 26:1-75; John 8:1-11

"Did He Hear My Cry" is the question echoed through the ages by all of God's children. Regardless of the stage of life we find ourselves in, we want to know if He sees us, feels our pain, rejoices in our good times, helps us in the hard times, and if He truly orchestrates our lives according to His will. This four minute song was written in five minutes by my Dad, James Pike, on a tearstained scrap piece of paper in his car. If you want to know the answer to the question, push play.
Song of Solomon 2:8-14; Isaiah 55:1-7; Luke 23:36-43

"The Tomb Is Empty" For the time leading up to February of 1999, my family scrimped and saved to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. While most on our trip took cameras, my Dad took pen and paper. At each site, he captured the moments and feelings with words. Our visit to the Garden Tomb brought about a song that speaks of a tomb devoid of death and full of hope. The tomb is not simply about eternal life in heaven, but also about victorious life while here on earth. A sarcophagus out of work and a Savior risen from death is the crux of our faith, the essence of our hope, the means to a victorious life, and the assurance of our own resurrection after we die.
Acts 1:3; Acts 2:22-33; Philippians 3:10-14; 1 Corinthians 15:12-19; 2 Corinthians 4:13-18

"He Is" Just in case I missed a spot, this song very literally incorporates every book of The Bible. From the old covenant to the new covenant, it speaks of Who God was and is to His people. This is an anthem to our God, Jehovah, speaking His attributes, His mighty works, and His majesty.
Genesis 1:1-Revelation 22:21
