I. catacombs - II. confessionals - III. CATHEDRALS
Begin and start again....
The neon lights came sprouting from the scorched wreckage like vines;
twining and twisting as if alive.
From the ashes, dirt and clay was rebuilt the city of tall façades of marble and iron.
and from among them rose the tower; much taller than what was before.
Now its spires scrape along
the warm concrete underbelly of heaven
and a crowd gathers to watch it spark
like mid-summer fireworks.
Cathedrals, epistle 3: Millbrook's 3rd and final letter in a trilogy of EP's, is exactly what the title suggests that it might be; the glorious, epic, and grandiose finale'; the final broad stroke, flourish and long handed signature in the long overdue letter.
Cathedrals is the thunderous arrival as well as the triumphant exit. It is the cannons and streamers, the flinging open of doors, the hoisting above heads, the homecoming and the valediction.... and the defeat of defeatism. It has become the unveiling of what was thought never to be again.
Cathedrals is certainly not a derivate and any of it's sister works in the trilogy. With the streamlined, soaring harmonies and epic sonic landscapes that Millbrook have trademarked themselves with are present as well as an incredulous pop sensibility permeating and saturating every bar of music in this
collection, drenching every note.
Fans of Queen, Rufus Wainwright, and The Beatles will be instantly enamored with Cathedrals, which undeniably contains Millbrook's strongest songwriting to date. The orchestral draperies, and lush production are all impeccably hung over a sturdy wood & steel frame of solid songwriting.
This EP also features the epic single "Meet Me in the Fields" which has gained quite a bit of attention recently. The single, having been released in June, 2005 has made it's way onto radio stations and has become the darling of both cynic and critic alike. Also on this EP is the Lennon-esque "Crude Model of You" which was featured on the 2003 International Pop Overthrow compilation CD
If you've already been introduced to the music of Millbrook, this EP will doubtlessly be your new favorite - an expansion of all the quirk, passion, and musicality that have always set them apart. If you've not yet been introduced to Millbrook's music, this EP is definitive and says it all. A perfect place to tether yourself to as you explore more of the Millbrook music that has accolades all across the board from Rufus Wainwright to Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.
