Spin Cycle

by Michael Lowenstern

This album from one of the world's most celebrated jazz bass clarinetists is a really fun ride. Elements of world music, blues, funk, and electronica weave their way throughout the ten tunes, with Mike's solid-as-hell bass clarinet playing as the anchor.

Album Notes
"An Instrumental-electronica-jazz-world-bassclarinet-funk fest." - Keyboard
(okay, I lied, no one reads Keyboard any more anyway)

This fifth solo release breaks new -- or rather old -- ground in many ways. My first instrument was the harmonica (and not the little blues harps, but a full chromatic job), given to me and taught by my dad, Ed Lowenstern, when I was only 2 years old. After a 30-year+ hiatus on the instrument, you'll get to hear some great playing on "My Mouth" as I gets my "harmonica-legs" under me again.

New sounds on this release also include the "WiCoder" - an EWI based vocoder - and my new toy, the Korg Kaossilator (which is actually incredibly versatile for a little yellow piece of plastic).

Violinist, Todd Reynolds (the other half of our band "Slow Boys") joins on "Boot" for a great blues romp. Of course, lots of bass clarinet playing everywhere, and really fun, accessible, and easy to listen to tunes round out this collection.

Thanks - hope you enjoy it!

-Mike, June 2010
