Another Fabulous Chapter
It took me a little while to get into the heart of this album-- just a bit more 'oblique' and subtle (if you can believe that)
than the also vital and fantastic Yours Around the Rosies (go buy that too-- immediately!!!). But it was worth it: title track (both versions), I Said Don't Kiss Me, DOOM, Heartbreak Party and the amazing Oh Well leave me in awe really. And the rest are cool too. Yes, there are elements recalling early 10,000 Maniacs,
The Sundays, Innocence Mission, Canadian 'country pop' band Nathan, and Beady Belle (and probably others). But Becky Jean Williams & co. take all that to another place, creating
their own 'alternative pop-folk' magic. And this band is such a nice contrast to the also great Late Night Alumni work. It's subtle; it's charming: but this music packs a real melodic and harmonic whallop. These bands and Williams are the first pop music of the young 2010's I've heard to really make me sit up and take notice. Great stuff.
