ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Children today groove to the beat of rap, rock, country, hip-hop and classic 80's pop. And that is exactly what educational performer/songwriter Mr. Billy CD offers on his latest AWARD WINNING CD "Playground". The songs are upbeat, educational and fun. Elementary and secondary school students co-wrote nine out of the twelve songs on this collection during six-trait songwriting residencies between November 2003 and March 2004.

Lyrics to all songs are available below (SCROLL DOWN!)

The songs are diverse and very catchy. Many encourage movements and group participation, like the B-52's inspired "Ants in Your Pants Dance" and the group chant "The Dog Ate My Homework". A classic song gets a fresh coat of paint in "Old MacDonald Had a Rock and Roll Band". One of the great moments on this CD was written by kindergarteners titled "Don't Call Me a Bird" a song inspired by the book "Stella Luna" which compares bats and birds and shows off just how creative and intelligent small children can be. There are songs about outer space, reading, safety and "The Magic of our Future"(Children, of course). And in a surprise addition to his usual fare of contemporary beats and styles, you will find a polka called "Super Monkey" (just for fun!).

As a special bonus, Mr. Billy has included the song "Let's Go Writing". Also known as the "Six-Trait Song" on this CD. He has been performing it for over two years and it has never been made publicly available until now.

Mr. Billy is a full time academic entertainer from De Pere, Wisconsin, a two time Children's Music Web Award winner, and is recently voted "Northeastern Wisconsin's Family Favorite Children's Entertainer".

LYRICS TO ALL SONGS...

Reading is Magic

Let’s go on a magic trip
Open a book not of a bag of chips
Get off the couch and take a look
At all the exciting story books

Reading is magic, reading is fun!
It can cast a spell on anyone
It’s hard to put a book down before you’re done
Reading is magic, reading is fun!

There are lots of different kinds of books
Biographies, fairy tales, and cookbooks
Magical places near and far
Books about a boy with a lightning scar

CHORUS

The adventures never have to end
Share new books with all your friends
Your imagination will grow and grow
With every book you get to know

CHORUS

Learn about things you never knew before
Foreign countries, famous people, and more

CHORUS
-----------------

Old MacDonald had a Rock & Roll Band

Old MacDonald had a Rock & Roll Band, ee-yi-ee-i-oh
And in his Band he had some Drums, ee-yi-ee-i-oh
With a (Drum Sound) here And a (Drum Sound) there
Here a (Drum Sound), there a (Drum Sound)
Everywhere a (Drum Sound)
Old MacDonald had a Rock & Roll Band, ee-yi-ee-i-oh ·

2nd verse: BASS·
3rd verse: GUITAR·
4th verse: PIANO·
5th verse: TRUMPET

Go, Old Macdonald go!
Go, Old Macdonald go, go!
Old Macdonald likes to rock and roll!
Go, Old Macdonald go!
Go, Old Macdonald go, go!
Old Macdonald likes to rock and roll!
-----------------

The Dog Ate My Homework

Oh, no, what’ll I do
When the teacher calls my name
She wants my paper that’s due today
It’s lost its missing its gone away

The Dog ate my homework (Roof! Roof!)
The Dog ate my homework (Roof! Roof!)
The Dog ate my homework (Roof! Roof!)
I’m not lying I’m telling the truth
The Dog ate my homework (Roof! Roof!)

I left it on the table and the dog came along
When I turned around I saw it was gone
I looked all around and no trace was found
I searched up and down in the trees and on the ground.

Chorus

I found it in the doghouse all chewed up
Then I knew I was out of luck
If the teacher gives my one more chance
I’ll do a wiggle-jiggle dance.

Chorus
-----------------

The Ants in Your Pants Dance

I’ve got a funny feeling and it’s tickling me
It feels like something’s crawling from my toes to my knees
My legs are getting itchy, is it poison ivy?
What else could it be? Could it be a flea biting me?
Oh no! Oh no!

I feel so itchy and I want to scratch
Like a monkey or a dog or a flea filled cat
Look at me now I’m starting to shake
Moving my hips like a big earth quake
Oh no! Oh no!

Shake you right leg, shake your left leg
Shake it up, shake it down
Spin around and around and around and around!
And do the ants in your pants dance
The ants in your pants dance
Shake you right leg, shake your left leg
Shake it up, shake it down
And do the ants in your pants dance
The ants in your pants dance

Everybody wants to dance like me
Let me tell you it’s as easy as can be
Find an anthill about so tall
And wait for those critters to creep and crawl

CHORUS
-----------------

Thirty Minutes or Less
(Around the Solar System)

I was sitting in my living room watching ET
When a polka dotted alien fell on me
It wasn’t a dream. I wanted to scream!
I thought all aliens were green and mean

How did he get here I wanted to know
He told me he fell through a big black hole
He wasn’t scary, he wasn’t green
He wanted a friend to take sightseeing

Thirty minutes or less, thirty minutes or less
I can take you around the solar system in thirty minutes or less
Thirty minutes or less, thirty minutes or less,
I can take you around the solar system in thirty minutes or less

We climbed aboard his UFO
But he went too fast and I yelled, “Whoa!”
The trip was fun, but way too fast
Here’s the planets we just blew past
We saw Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
Jupiter, Saturn and all the stars
Uranus and Neptune, Pluto was last
Thirty minutes went by way too fast!

CHORUS

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
Saturn, Jupiter and all the stars
Uranus and Neptune, Pluto was last
Thirty minutes went by way too fast!

CHORUS
-----------------

The Magic of Our Future

You don't need a crystal ball
Or a talking mirror 5 feet tall
Close your Harry Potter book
'Cause there's no potion you can cook
All you have to do is take a look, to find the magic

Who will be the magic?
We will be the magic!
Who will be the magic of our future?
Who will be the magic?
We will be the magic!
Children! The magic of our future
Children! The magic of our future

The magic and the miracles
Live inside each boy and girl
Little dreamers of today will be
Tomorrows leaders magically
Turning hopes and dreams into reality, just like magic

CHORUS
-----------------

Don’t Call Me a Bird

I have a head and a body too
Tiny eyes for seeing you
And a mouth I use to eat
A brain, two feet a heart that beats

Don’t call me a bird
Just because I have wings
Don’t call me a bird
I’m not a feathered thing
Don’t call me a bird
Don’t even try
I’m not a bird, what am I?
I’m not a bird, what am I?

You won’t find a beak on me
I have no nest up in a tree
I don’t lay eggs by the bunch
Or feed my babies worms for lunch

CHORUS

I fly at night and think its great
Using radar to echolocate
Thumbs and fur, hear me squeak
Upside down I like to sleep

CHORUS
-----------------

Creature Teacher

It was the first day of school my teacher was new
I wondered if my teacher would be creepy or cool
When I opened the door and peeked inside
I saw that my teacher had piercing red eyes

Creepy, crazy, freaky, scary and weird
That’s the kind of day this has been
Loco, cranky, coo-coo, fearful and strange
I wish that this day would end

She opened her mouth and out came weird sounds
We shivered in fear and knocked the door down
Outside in the hall the principal screamed
My eyes blasted open it was only a dream

CHORUS
-----------------

Super Monkey

Whatcha gonna do when your cat’s in a tree?
Time to call – SUPER MONKEY!
You need to bring your grade up from a F to a D
Time to call – SUPER MONKEY!

What do you do if you lose your keys?
Time to call – SUPER MONKEY!
Or too many bananas growing in Hawaii
Who can eat them all? – SUPER MONKEY!

Who is Super Monkey?
No one seems to know
Did he come from Space?
A Laboratory Place?
Or escape from a circus show?

If you have trouble with a Bully or a Bee
Time to call – SUPER MONKEY!
He protects us all from sea to shining sea
What’s his name? -- SUPER MONKEY!

CHORUS
-----------------

Let’s Go Writing

Let’s go writing
Six-Trait Writing
Yes, it’s exciting
Six-Trait Writing
One, two, three, four, five, Six-Traits
Use them all don’t hesitate
When you’re writing
Use Six-Trait Writing

Trait number one is where it’s begun
Every writer begins with ideas
Trait number two is important too
It’s no surprise you have to organize
Next find your voice and work on word choice
That makes four but wait there’s more!

Trait number five keeps your writing alive
It’s called sentence fluency
Trait number six is the last big fix, re-write and proof read
Conventions is the way to make good work great
And now you know all Six-Traits

CHORUS
-----------------

My Big Accident

My name is Amanda, I come from space
My home Planet X is a freaky place
A green alien with a slimy beard
My pet monkey Zippo is really weird

I was in my pink spaceship heading home
Zippo wouldn’t leave my beard alone
I yelled stop! He threw a spoon
I lost control and I hit the Moon!

I hit the Moon and I saw the stars
I didn’t even make it as far as Mars
It was a bad day that I’ll never forget
The day that I had my big accident
The day that I had my big accident

Don’t make the same mistake as me
Always drive responsibly
Keep your seatbelts on, and your pets in back
So that you’ll never have a terrible crash

CHORUS

The day that I had my big accident
The day that I had my big accident
The day that I had my big accident
The day that I had my big accident

Playground

P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D
P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D

Can you hear that happy sound?
Kids are playing on the new playground
Running, climbing, swinging too
That's what active children do
Fresh air
It's there
To share
Life without a care

P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D
P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D

A great playground should always be
Clean and totally drug free
A place for all the kids to meet
Instead of playing on the street
Warm sun
And fun
Be young
Each and every one

P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D
P-L-A-Y-G-R-O-U-N-D

It's time to play!

Truly a Musical Playground! Something For Everyone!
Mr. Billy does it again! Not only does he have great weird and spooky songs such as Creature Teacher and 30 Minutes Or Less--including kids on vocal accompaniament!!--on this album, but he includes super funny stuff like The Dog Ate My Homework and a really fine message song in Reading Is Magic! All elementary schools should have this album in their libraries!

Edna C. Justice and Family

Fun and entertaining!
Among the songs of Mr. Billy's we like the most are Reading is Magic, The Dog Eat My Homework, and The Ants In Your Pants Dance. I think most of Mr. Billy's songs are educational and they are really intended for children since their wordings are easy to understand.
