With interpretations from jazz to funk, adjust your mind for a musical trip that only Murphy Edwards can dispense, on his J Enterprises release: "PRECISE".
A student of what is often referred to as "free form", Murphy approaches his compositions not only as a theme centered to a structure, but as multi-layered structures based on theories.
This approach allows the musicians to take the musical theory, if you will, and expand on it to the length of their own imagination. The end result is very engaging, or as Murphy dubs it: "POPINTELLECTSTRUMENTALS", translated to mean be smart in regards to the theory, and in advance of relative to the structural boundaries, or lack thereof.
Sitting in on the recording sessions was a blast!! Murphy's approach, not that this hasn't been done before, was to have the musicians record the selections at different times. Danielle Nicole would come in during the morning hours and she would go through the routine with Murphy of laying down several drum tracks, or programming rhythms and be done. Christopher Laron and Curtis Lewis would follow, maybe 2 or 3 hours later, and these two would "free jam" to whatever key Murphy was vibin' on. Tony Yamahura was always used as the icing on the cake, adding the delicate final touches here and there.
The only track recorded together as a band on this disc is "PREJUDICE", which was an inclusive "free jam" all it's own.
In closing, it was a great delight to be a part of this record coming together, and I'm sure you'll dig what I now only refer to only as........ SPONTANEOUS MUSIC!!!!
