Conductor María Guinand is the founder and director of three presigious Venezuelan choirs: the Cantoría Alberto Grau, the Cantoría Universitaria Simón Bolívar, and the Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar. Ms. Guinand has received the highest honors at international festivals and competitions and frequently presents workshops and seminars on Latin American and Venezuelan choral music. She has also appeared as a featured conductor at the International Federation of Choral Music World Choral Symposium, the Oregon Bach Festival, and was awarded the Internationes Kulturpreis for her work with the Academia Bach de Venezuela.
Born in Caracas, María Guinand has earned music degrees from the University of Bristol, England, and studied choral conducting with Alberto Grau and Helmut Rilling. She currently teaches choral conducting with Universitario de Estudios Musicales and is Dean of Music Maters Degree Faculty at the Simón Bolívar University. In addition to these responsibilities, she conducts the Cantoría Alberto Grau, the Orfeón Universitario Simón Bolívar, and is Assistant Conductor of the Choral Symphonic ensembles of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar. Ms. Guinand is also the General Director of the Fundación Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, and Latin American Vice President of the International Federation of Choral Music.
