Album Notes
The Obonu drums of the different tribes (the Ga's, the Twi's, the Ewe's, Ahanti's and Dagarti's) are normally wellkept secrets in the king's palace and they are brought out onlx at dunbars, special festivals or when the king dies. In agreement with the 12 tribes of Ghana, Mustapha Tettey Addy and his Obonu drummers now use these royal drums in concerts and on this record. The tracks start in their original version, as they are played since the beginning of last century at the king's palace. But during each piece Addy starts to rearange and reinterpret the music - though the original theme is still being retained. The Royal Drums of Ghana was recorded in Ocotber 1991 in Ghana
