Album Notes
BUTTERSCOTCH was originally released by Michelle on her own label, Sugarhawk Records in 1997. SONY/ France repackaged the album under a new title, MEMPHIS, and established Michelle White in Europe. With rave reviews comparing her writing to Van Morrison, Neil Young, and Rickie Lee Jones, Michelle toured extensively over the next two years playing the prestigious MIDEM, the New Morning, as well as various sold out clubs and festivals. She eventually opened for TOTO, with only her piano and bass player, for tens of thousands of people every night, including BERCY. Her raw and fiery live performances were compared to Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and Mick Jagger. Whether performing solo behind her Wurlitzer, or with a full band and horn section, she captivated France and eventually the rest of Europe. She has yet to release an album in her home country of the U.S. but is currently in negotiations to do so. Like her father, legendary Tony Joe White, Michelle found her audience abroad appreciated her Southern roots music, intimate vocals, and soulful lyrics first.
This album includes production by Grammy Award winner, John Leventhal (Shawn Colvin, Roseanne Cash) as well as many famous musicians including her father Tony Joe White. The album is all analogue and many of the tunes were recorded in Michelle's home studio, giving the album great warmth. All of the songs are personal and each one has a story behind it which was included in the SONY package and will eventually be posted here.
