Tech metal with real balls! i love it!
The sound on this record is everything i love about metal and nothing i hate. A perfect blend of breakdowns, explosions and just plain balls.

Short but deceptively sweet, the debut from this Oakland five piece seems intent on bludgeoning you to death with their intricately intense vision of metal, whether you like it or not. These are songs that have succumbed to a gainfully wretched purpose and ambition, a real surge of harbored melancholy that is reflected flawlessly in both the distraught lyricism and the stamina-challenging musicianship. While characteristically raw, the vocals here are notably brilliant at leading the charge, seemingly taunting the rest of the group to play harder and faster. They oblige, displaying only enough restraint to make sure their parts connect and then explode again, bridging the gap just long enough to demolish it at the next turn. I'm hesitant to say it, but parts of this (some of the best parts) flirt with math-rock tendencies, embracing complex jabs and hits that allow each member enough leeway to tinker and really add their fingerprint to the proceedings. It's this attention to detail that not only makes this such an effective record, but also makes it stand out as smart, fierce, and wonderfully hard to classify.

I'd say this is a great record if you're in the mood for something similar to the Dillinger Escape Plan. It's got a lot of energy and complexity. This is, rhythmically, very technical music. No stupid chugging break-downs like so many hardcore bands.

While it offers pretty much everything I like in hardcore music, I have to say that I don't find the songs that memorable or different from each other. But the songs create the right harcore feel and mood.

Overall, it's just about perfect for fans of this mathy hardcore kind of music. I love it. I give it four stars instead of five only because I don't get the songs stuck in my head.

Kick-ass complexity!
I got their demos at a live show in SF, and loved them. I couldn't wait for this to come out! These guys really have it together, and have a great talent for pulling off these really complex rhythms. This is brilliant, like all of their stuff, and I hope that Myotonia's around for a long time.
